most secure gun/trigger lock?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

most secure gun/trigger lock?

Postby darkk » 15 Apr 2007 18:06

I have a Ruger 10/22 and an Olympic Arms AR-15 for which I'm looking for some secure trigger locks, preferably with medeco cores. They rifles are in a locked case right now but i'd like to put individual locks on them as well. Anyone have any recommendations?

I think it's pretty much a consensus that trigger locks don't work very well either because they're built badly or have easily picked mechanisms. Granted I haven't seen a medeco trigger lock before but you'd probably be better off with a heavy duty gun safe.

yeah i have a gun lock that came with a mossburg shotgun. im able to pick it without a tension tool or anything. in fact i think i can pick it faster than using a key if i had one. most gun locks are meant for small childeren so there not made very well

get a though-barrel cable lock at least, not a trigger lock. and yes, a box, separate from your ammo that has a lock on it is a great addition.

yeah, the cable locks where what I was considering but all I've seen where ones made my Master and other cheap brands. Does Medeco or any other high security manufacturer make one?

yes, my ammo and magazines are of course kept in a seperate safe.

figured they would be :)

Honestly, the nicest one I've come across was a baretta branded one (spelling?) but even still, they likely just outsource it to the same people master outsource it to, you know?

if you happen to find, or if another member happens to mention a more secure lock I'd pick one up for a friend who's had similar concerns.

At this point, with the complacent attitudes of the companies who makes firearm locks, the only sure way to own a gun and make sure no one else can tamper with it I think, is to dismantle it completely and lock each part in a separate secure enclosure.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Paging M.W. Tobias.

Marc has alot to say about trigger locks, and its not very good at all. Just because a lock has a Medeco cylinder does not make it more secure. For example. In a certain installation common in commercial buildings a door with some medeco mortise cylinders can be very easily bypassed. I have a 5 pin Schlage cylinder that is completely immune to that bypass.

To be honest i dont know much about gun/trigger locks but i will add this as no one else has. if your going with a cable lock make sure its an armored cable with interlocking rings. these are MUCH more secure.
