Wierd Key

I was in Physics today and my teacher gave me his keys to get something out of the cabinet. Upon opening the pin-tumbler lock, i noticed a little notch in the bottom part of the tip and was wondering what it was for. Unfortunately, i cant just take the key, so i traced it and took a picture of my beautiful drawing:



this little picture of a cylinder in front of an "N" is the logo that was on the key. If anybody has any info on this little notch and ways to bypass it, it would be much appriecated.

(BTW--dont worry marso, im not planning on picking any lock that is not mine...just simple curiosity.)

ah...didnt work, oh well, um...invision a key, about the size of a padlock key. theres a little notch taken out of the bottom half, front edge of the key.(if that makes any sense)

Actually it doesnt work. Its a National Cabinet Lock co. lock and key. Probably 4 or 5 pin. The notch doesn't serve any locking function. If I remember correctly, its simply a stop.

nope, can't see the picture.... but that's just me.

it could be that the notch was taken out to help distinguish between that key and another similar key used for a different lock.

I have a couple like that except the notch is in the actual handle (if that's what you call it) of the key. could be that the notch could be put there in the actual part of the key that goes into the key way without affecting how it interacts with the pins.

also depends what type of lock it is I guess..

Yep, National Cabinet lock co. Very common on cabinets, drawers, etc.

If I had to guess about this key I would say that may-be there was a warded piece in the cyclinder to allow that key to fully enter the cyclinder where others won't. I wouldn't think this type of security would effect picking though.

Nope, just the design of the lock. Its a positive stop I beleive. BTW, for those who care, the National Cabinet lock keyway also enters the Best E keyway.

Yeah, its kinda wierd getting an e-mail notice saying someone replied to a thread of mine that i had forgotten about.

i wil ltell you why it is there

becasue the core would fall out of the lock if that part of the key was there.

stick an fr2 blank into a national and the core will pop out making fitting the key easy
