Postby BrockJ » 14 Jun 2007 14:25

Ok so i bought a kwikset deadbolt to practice with and i can get it fine even if i put mushroom pins in it. i can get my house door i can get my neibors door (of course it was ok with them if i did because i asked before i did anything) but i have two master locks one a 5 and the other a three i got the three to open one but that was it and i cant get the 5 to do anything so is there anything i can do to try and learn padlocks cause it is really frustrating me.

well if it's laminated master locks... then all you need is paitience and practise.... they are very easy locks... try using a half diamond

Are you sure one of them is a 5 pin? They both look like a Master #3 to me.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

it is possible that one be a master no5 no difference from the no3 ( well the no5 has a Hardened boron alloy shackle )

ya the thing about the master locks (I am directing this to the guy who made the thread) in the laminted steel department, like the 2 locks you have, the padlocks with the strips of metal. There are I belive, 1s,3,5,and 7s.

5s are the biggest, for like big fences and stuff, then it goes 1,3, then 7 7 being very small for securing something like a small toolbox or something.

I don't know why they go like that, doesn't make sense, 1 or 7 should be biggest and work their way down or up the numbers, but it doesnt.

so master locks all have 4 pins. If you have the keys could you post pics of them and tell us which key goes to which lock?

Totally different tension between your kwikset and the Master.
Practice :-)

so do i want to apply alot of tension or just a little and how do you tell if a pin is set, and is there a posibility of there being a binding pin

BrockJ, first, the pictures you posted are way to big. Try adjusting the image size on your camera or resize them in a PSP or something.

Second, it seems you have not found the binding order. It's not always front to back or back to front, there can be many combinations. Since the locks you have will not have security pins in them, try forgetting about picking the lock to open it, instead figure out the binding order, with light to moderate tension you will find a binding pin then lift till it sets continue the process and the lock will open.

BrockJ, when picking your master, do you notice the pins setting at all?
If its an old lock, and you notice it seems as if you set all the pins, but the plug isn't turning so you think you have false sets; it could be that you actually picked it, but you need to apply more torque to spin the plug. That happened to me with the first master like that that I tried.
