Brand X bought by Brand Y

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Brand X bought by Brand Y

I'd like to get a list of all brands and their parent company. This might include companies and their brands that were recently acquired by another company with-or-without their own brand. If anyone has more detailed history of these family ties, including dates of acquisition, and whether the acquired brand was absorbed (discontinued) or replaced the existing brand. Other politics and gossip of acquisition appreciated.

Let me start by saying I just found out that Master Lock does own American Lock. I don't know when American Lock was acquired by Master, but it came as a shock.

let's see..

i think the family tree goes something like this.

Alien Illuminati Tribunal --> Disney --> VIACOM --> CocaCola --> GE --> NBC --> ASSA Abloy Group --> all other lock brands other than Schlage.

Ingersoll Rand --> Schlage

I think those are the primary family tree branches.

According to a Master Lock Press Release, Master bought American back in April of 2003.

http://commercial.masterlock.com/press.shtml

ASSA ABLOY, --> YALE

Black & Decker --> Kwikset

Stanley --> Security Group Inc. --> Sargent and Greenleaf, Inc.

I'm all googled out. Its time for bed. Found a bunch of neat facts about the above though. Especially how Kwikset got their name. Come to find out, its not just because they are 'kwik' to pick / bypass ;)

ps. type this in google
Code: Select all
Yale Lock Parent Company
and just keep switching Yale for what ever name brand lock you want to know.

Well, Assa Group has a bunch of them (Yale, , and so does Kaba Group. Black & Decker bought Kwikset and Weiser, while Ingersoll Rand bought Schlage and Falcon. Interesting note about this is that Weiser and Falcon were practically the same lock co at one point in history, both sharing the same pinning specs and possibly same keyway.

http://www.assaabloy.com/en/com/Market- ... ll-Brands/

Here are some we're (I'm) familiar with:
ASSA, Abloy, Arrow, Corbin (and thus Russwin), Dominion, Lockwood, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Sargent, Yale.
[ Guli and Wangli are apparently big in China. Never heard of 'em. ]

Kaba Group is a little harder to find their list of acquisitions. I've found various newsletters of companies they buy out, but they must be absorbing their technology and ditching the name.

well there you go, maybe that's why whitco and lockwood stuff works well. they're owned by the same parent company.

hahaha, that explains alot.

I recentely found out while writing my Medeco article that Assa Abloy owns Medeco...

That came as a bit of a surprise.

For me, the main ones (in US, AU, UK, EU) are ASSA Abloy and Kaba. I think Black & Decker owns some lock companies also. There are still some who refuse to bow to the pressure of globalisation. All strength to them, I say. Locks would be very dull if there were only 1 or 2 companies making them!

If you ever see a US Lock mortise or rim cylinder on an American door, I believe it was or is owned by Juncunc Bros. aka American Lock (same company as American series 700 and 5200 US padlock)

Interesting...I have a few US locks, and the keyway is mean.

I would've never guessed they were part of American Lock.

As far as I know, the Kaba Group contains Kaba Bauer, Mauer, Gege, Mas-Hamilton, Legic, Ilco, Silca. Perhaps some more I don't know of ;)
