I just started a few days ago with a Kwikset deadbolt and I think that's a great way to go. You can open the lock and remove the pins easily, which you cannot on a padlock.
The basic idea is to take out all but one pin, practice that for a short while, add another pin, work on that, etc..., until you're back up to the full 5 pins. It doesn't take that long but gives you a good feeling of how you're progressing.
It's usually only about $2 more for a double-sided deadbolt (keyholes on both sides) than a single-sided one. I'd get a double, now you have two locks to practice on or you have a spare to loan to friends who are interested.
