first of all, i would like to say hello, and i appreciate the site you guys are running here. i've been a member for quite some time now, but i'm shy by nature. the name is bran, and i am a locksports enthusiast.
but enough about me, right?
well recently i was wandering through a hardware store when i came across a master lock that had the same shape/design as the abus discus. then just yesterday, i was looking around at local flea market when i found a brinks lock with this design as well.
my question -- are there any internal similarities between the two US locks and the abus? thanks in advance

Ok, first off, I don't know, but, I hope someone is willing to help you, I
just wanted to give you the welcome salute:

you from, I mean, where do you live Bran?

Before you pick a lock:
The first thing that you should do is check to make sure that
the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.

I generally consider the Brinks R70 to be the US equivalent (read copy-cat) of the Abus Discus although I have seen the Abus in a couple of locksmith shops.

since these locks are welded shut, i haven't taken any apart. but I believe that internally most of the boltworks are very similiar, and since the lock industry has been consolidated by mergers they are likely under the same mega corp.
the significant internal for picking would be the cylinder, and here there are likely some quality differences. I would guess that the abus is still better than many of the copies, kryptonite makes a copy, and the welding is not finished through the bite where the shackle comes across, this is an issue because it would let water into the lock faster, and water can ice up and freeze the lock. Early abus locks did not have the drain hole, but now they all seem to have it.
Many of these are now made in china, and many storage locker chains and other businesses will have a custom stampin on the clamshell. this would not indicate that your storage locker company is in the lock industry, but it might indicate that they are in a kaibatsu with some part of the industry.
There are versions of the discus that have abloy and I think some other locks cylinders, look on you tube for brunos dimple discus picking video.

well thanks for the information and more importantly, the warm welcome. if i cannot find an abus at the local lock shops i may purchase the r70 to practice around with. right now i only have one lock with security pins, and it is the 6-pin guard security lock mentioned in this thread. for security pins, i would like to start with a 4 pin lock.
