Gatehouse 6 pin deadbolts

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Gatehouse 6 pin deadbolts

Postby brianp » 17 Jan 2008 14:57

I was wondering if anyone here has much experience with the 6 pin GateHouse DCT1? I am thinking of buying one but I don't want to get one if it is too easy to pick. I can pick the schlage deadbolts with no problem but I was looking to get a slightly harder lock to mess with. If not this one which do you recommend as a next step lock over the schlage locks?
Thanks!

Gatehouse? That lock doesn't even exist. Its from a dream or something.

What you need is a M-E-D-E-C-O

Buy em cheap and simple on eBay or talk to many of the 1000's of active members on the site who will sell them to you. Get an entire Medeco Deadbolt kit for $50.

It's from the Lowe's dream. Just a rebranded lock like Baldwin (which I think is Ingersoll Rand, the same people who own Schlage).

to the original poster: price doesnt mean quality. the Gatehouse's are more for putting on a nice door, but I can't see them being any better engineered, they're just fancier looking than a boring old Schlage.

doug's right on the Medeco, or you can get a Schlage Primus. This also depends on if are buying for picking practice or to put on your front door.

I am looking for it to practice on. I think Medeco may be out of my reach proficiency wise right now but I am game to try anything. I'll keep my eye out for a medeco.

Here's a link to the lock I was referring to:

Thanks!

Oh. I misread your post. I thought you were going to put the lock on your home.

Anyways don't buy practice locks at lowes or home depot. Buy them from me. I have tons. I will sell you 10 locks for the price you will buy 1 lock from lowes. And there are many other people on the site that would love to take your money for locks. Also, you are just going to throw away the deadbolt kit, thats a big waste.

Find a locksmith, tell him you need his unusable or old cylinders for a school science experiment. (It works every time, until you start having science experiments every week). Tell him your going to make a cutaway and explain how a lock works to your class.

I swear after making this post everyone is going to blab at about how my idea will never work and about how some locksmiths are jerks and how some locksmiths aren't jerks, it just matters what kinds of locksmith you find blah blah blah.

Dude, it will work, just save yourself the money.

locks

check fleamarkets and scrap metal recyclers for some used locks, you can find best sfic locks, these present a good picking challenge if thats what you want without the real difficulty of primus or medeco. If you do decide to buy a medeco, look for a cam lock rather than a full bore cylinder, these are more pickable.

the good thing about the fleamarkets and scrap dealers, is that you can buy some high security locks very cheap.

It also will not really be a 6 pin lock. Locks from big box stores like Lowe's are drilled for 6 pins but only have 5 pins in the plug.
