Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

I have a safe I need to crack...

Postby meat-bix » 23 Jan 2008 0:11

I'm not privileged to use the safes section of this site, so maybe somebody can let me in there. I hope I'm not braking the rules by posting this here - let me know if I am.

I have a Locktech SM020 safe which I need to crack.
See it here:
http://www.aje.com.au/featured/locktech/locktech.htm
http://safes4less.stores.yahoo.net/pasmfihosa2.html

The owners (some friends of mine) use it in their shop and have never known the combination. It's written somewhere, but they can't find it.

They just left the combination dialed in, and used the key to open and lock it. Nobody was allowed to move the dial!

Inevitably, the dial was bumped yesterday, and now they're locked out

I have the key and the safe sitting here beside me and not much more than 'how stuff works' to help me get in.

Can anybody please give me some help?
I'm well aware that safe-cracking is a very precise skill and nobody can expect to master it in an afternoon, but I wanna give it my best shot!
If I can't do it (which seems likely), they'll just get a locksmith in.

There's a decent chance that they're using the try-out combination, but google isn't turning it up for me - any clues?

Any advice or links to guides would be great.
Thanks!

That is against the rules, the only advice you'll get is to call a locksmith. Sorry.

How do I go about being allowed into that part of the site by the way?
Cheers.

even if we told you it would take so much practice. the safe is useless, open it destructivly, and buy another, prob cheaper than a locky. or ofcourse get a locky to come and open it for you. there is no quick fix.

maybe try, 50 25 50 10 20 30 but you will be lucky ;)

Well that was an accident waiting to happen!

Only thing I could add is that the Matt Blaze guide is out there on the net, freely available to anyone.
It's a great guide, but you could be quite awhile trying to master it.

Personally speaking, I would caution against trying to open it, unless your a pro, which you ain't!!

Problem is, you open it, bring it back, and someone "thinks" that there was more money in it than there is now, or some such funny idea that people get when you least expect it to happen, usually when you do a favor for free.
Or sometime later, someone gets the "funny" idea that there was more money in the safe than there is now, and thinks that you have the ability to open a safe and ponders , they add 2 + 2 and come up with 5.
Of course they will never say this to your face, but .... and that's the problem the "but" factor, people think strange things!

If you want to crack safes, go buy practice locks / safes, else, leave it to someone else.

Me, id bring it back and say it was beyond my abilities and leave it at that.
No damage done.

Cheers guys.
I'm a bit cautious about breaking the rules here, but I figure I should be ok to give you an update.

The dial, once all the wheels in the wheelpack had been caught and were turning together, was extremely stiff to turn. I had to keep drying my hands in order to turn it at all. Of course in the reverse direction when just the drive cam was turning, it was quite free (until it caught the other wheel s in that direction).

It's either seizing up or broken in some way. That can't be normal.

Anyway, my chances of cracking a working safe are pretty close to zero, so I just took it back to them.
Thanks for the advice. I'll see what their locksmith says and maybe chat to him if he comes in to crack it.
:)
