Inside a regular lock such as a dead bolt, what exactly prevents the pins from being pushed down out of the lock where the key would enter? I could never figure that out.

That's part of what the side wards do. You know how in the keyway there are always little metal notches that stick out from the sides? Those are the side wards, they go all the way back, and the top one has the extra job of holding the pins in place.
