Abus 66/40

Postby malmatalla » 2 Feb 2008 13:41

I found a lock at home, which i dont have a key to.. found it in a drawer.
Its a Abus 66/40 and ive searched for it on the net, but cant find anything about it anywhere.
Have been trying to pick it for 2 weeks or something and cant get it open.. it really frustrates me, and im going crazy on this.. Just got two other locks otherwise that i can unlock. one is a diamond 7510p and that one comes up really easy. The other lock is unmarked, but i get that opened to..

I havent been picking for so long, so i need some locks to boost my condfidence with so i dont find myself giving up.

Anyone got any tips for this lock? and have somebody seen one?

I got a Majestic lockpick set that i bought from lockpicks.se

Please help!

Doesnt seem that anyone know this lock =/ kept looking at forum and found one post about it in the middle.. and no one had heard of it even then =/

But anyways, i got some more to tell u so maybe you can help me more..

When i pick the lock, i get some pins up.. but the front pin allways get stuck up (at the cheerline i belive). So i must release tension. And then i can hear the pins, one by one, dropping. Maybe 4 pins. So that means it is 5 pins in it if i got all the other ones up.
How do i proceed after this? unfortunately i doesnt have the key for it, cuz i found it in a drawer.. never seen it before.. searched the house for locks and didnt find it then.

I can try to get a camera and take a pitchure of it if it would be easier for you to help me then?

Bye

hehe third post on my own topic!

Acctually found the key for this lock. and it works! =)

but now i need to get this lock apart so i can take out 4 of 5 pins and practice with only one of em =)

How do i do that? it doesnt have any screw that i can see in it, but there is a little hole where the key hold is.
Is that used somehow?

Hopefully ill get more answers on this problem =)

Are you sure it's a 66 series as even the Abus site doesn't have a reference for it?

Assuming it's a padlock, the little hole is a drainage hole to let the rain water out. It's highly unlikely you have padlock that can be repinned.

If all else fails there are padlocks that can be repinned.

Personally I think a lot is to be leaned by learning on locks that only have springs working on the pins and not on the plug as well like with padlocks.

Once you get used to the feel of pins in their various set states (or not set), it is worth investing in padlocks that can be repinned.

The thing that is driving me crazy is that thera are some sort of sercurity pins in my lock.. i think i red ABUS uses mostly mushroom pins. And i cant get past those.. not so wierd though, since im new to this. So it keeps on fooling me that i have setted pins, but i havent..
So maybe i should just go out and lock for a easy lock without security pins and keep on learning the feeling. the other lock i have now is so small.. and its hard to feel because of that.

im going thru the MIT guide now. and its really good. but i need lock that are easier to feel it on to start with.

Yep Abus have security pins and although not recommended that's the padlocks I started with. I have an excuse though as I work in a traditional hardware store that sells Abus and Sterling locks, both makes use security pins.

My first lock got my so frustrated I took it apart to see why it was causing my so many headaches

I then knocked myself together a "lock picking station" out of MDF and got myself a couple of pin cylinders.

Getting a cheap padlock without security pins would make things easier for you to start with. For myself, I'm glad I worked through the increasing number of pins method as it taught me a great deal.

The MIT guide is a great read and the first guide I used :)

So you didnt get the ABUS up as your first lock? or where you able to pick it? =)

Last question, were do you buy repinable locks in uk? if not on ebay..?

Must go to bed now.. been reading since 10 and the clock is 3am here now.. :P getting tired..

The Abus was my first padlock and real lock  That was after I spent 3 days repinning and learning on the rim cylinder.

Being in the trade I either chat up the sales rep, ask the mobile locksmiths what they have they can spare or go into the security specialist stores

Yep it's 2am here now and have to be at work myself at 8:30am
