Assa Twin V-10 Breakdown

Postby JK_the_CJer » 16 Feb 2008 14:10

Hey everyone,

Eyes_Only sent me this as part of a trade, so I spent the entire evening working on it. I finally picked it and did a quick breakdown + updated my site as usual. Here is the link:

http://theamazingking.com/locks.html#v10

If you guys have any questions about how it works, just let me know and I'll try to explain further. The locks doesn't have a key so I can't show that for reference. Its a pretty straightforward cylinder to understand, but if you get hung up, just ask. Let me know what you think :-)

Wow... wow.

I'm impressed you could pick that. And the breakdown is some very nice work. You know, with those skill, you should start a website detailing some of your picking exploits. Oh, wait...

Were you able to pick the top pins first then the sidebar, or did you have to pick them all "together"? I must say I'm surprised you could pick it.

I determined that you must pick the top pins first. This lines up with a bit of Medeco picking theory that relates to the shape of the sidebar as well. Your book's section on the Twin rocks, by the way.

Everyone: I'll try to get it on video soon. I think I can pull it off without taking all day this time (isn't that point, though :-))

You ever picked/attempted a Primus before? I'm curious to how similar they are since they both have similar locking mechanisms.

Nah, I dont have one yet. I have a feeling the Primus is easier though. If I understand them correctly, they have no false notches.

How'd you deal with the false notches?

They don't have false notches but their side pins need to be rotated and lifted so to me that sounds a whole lot worse. And the fact that the primus locks have really tight tolerances and you can hardly feel a thing when picking it makes me cry every time I see one of those locks.

Are you saying the Assa or the Schlage don't have the false notches?

ASSA does, but from memory I don't remember the Primus having false notches. Lemme take my Primus apart right now to find out for sure.

Nope, don't see any. Maybe the new Primus does.

Photoshopping? I don't get it, what is photoshopped?

JK, nice work and I can't believe you that you've picked an ASSA V-10, that is amazing!

I don't think it does. It's just got a new, 7th side bar milling. The key way remains the same to allow old Primus keys and the finger pins are cut to the same tolerances, etc. to match the old Primus keys.

In fact, in the February issue of of Locksmith Ledger they showed how you can convert an older Primus cylinder into a Primus XP cylinder by just adding one of the new finger pins and sidebars.
