How to take apart a padlock

Postby amaze1 » 17 Feb 2008 13:43

someone asked me to post this up. this was a cheap 99 cent lock. like a master lock 3
Step one. push the plastic band up to the top
Image[img]
step two. your gonna have to cut/grind off these rivets
Image
you can use a dremel or a bench grinder
Image
grind off all of them like this
Image
Now use a flat head screwdriver or a small chisel to remove the first metal plate
Image
use a hammer for assistance
Image
now you can take out the lock
Image
you can also unlock the padlock with a screwdriver

Nice photos. I took apart a very cheap warded padlock once to see how it was made. I wish I had taken some photos.

Actually, maybe I still have that lock around somewhere...

Wow, thanks for sharing that!

Is it only the first plate that comes off or can you remove all of them?

All of them come off but watch out becuase if you take out the top ones you can dissamble the locking mechanism and its a b*tch to put back together

Great job, real clean too. Wish I had taken a picture of my first attempt at taking a cheap padlock apart when I was high school freshman. I didn't have money for power tools or know that those little bumps on the bottom were rivets so I tried to cut the whole thing in half with a hacksaw by hand. I got 1/3 of the way before I gave up.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture
