nooby strikes out on 6 pin

After reading a mountain if info on this site, I was compelled to make a few tools and work on this huge lock. the only thing written on it is the words 'hardened' on the steel. It was mine and I gave myself permission to practice on it.
I tried raking it and then made a few mods to a pick I was working on. I could feel them but I couldn't count them. I worked a good hour trying. I figured a cheap lock like this would be easy. nooby mistake #1 and counting
I sanded down the side and counted 6 pin holes, ooops. Drilled them out, so I can put them back in one at a time. Looks like I have a million locks in my tool box with no keys to practice with.
This is so far very relaxing, I just sat there with my eyes closed trying to feel what was going on. I have a new hobby.

It's wonderful that you have found yourself a new hobby, but for the life of me I can't figure out if you are inquiring about a particular problem or just informing us about your progress.

It would be great if you could find away to post some pictures of this "huge luck" and also the picks you made that your working with. In return you will get more and better responces to your post.

sounds like a 50-75mm brass, no name or cheap named lock...sounds good so far, you have no idea what you are doing and already have a cutaway almost made but ya try to post pics of your tools and the lock, and maby other locks you have

excuse my noobishness.
As I mentioned I was just trying to see if I could actually pic or rake anything. Once I sarted with the big lock and my dremel I could't stop. I have made a very frankenstein cutaway.
I will post the pick and tools I made. After I pretty them up, alot.
Later last night I took my old Weiser in handle lock apart,sorta. I did get it to open but, the factory did a great job of hiding it all and crimping it closed, I couldnt see inside the lock so I am going to assume it is wafers, just didnt feel like pins. advice

Hey guys, I am not able to load pics as the cable pulled a Houdini and I do not want to buy a new one yet. If you new where I lived you would mail me one, lol.
I used a tool that I made that looks like a snake, worked slick, as soon as I put it in she popped, the pins were so excited they jumped to the shear line.
Is there any special tips loading pics on this site...

The picks are all hack saw blades milled down to .024" I made a big diamond for the big lock. The tensioners are all small allen keys from an Ikea bookshelf. I started working on the snake, gonna start over, it was not bumpy enough for the smaller locks. The length and thickness was good.
I raked the lock to open but I wasn't even thinking that it would have 6 pins. After the exitement of making the tools and opening both locks, I took the drill to the plugs and my angle grinder to find everything else. It was an experience. Now to get that master #3 open with my mcgyuver set.

that is the picture you missed...and you half diamond needs to have more of a slope on the front...the rake would look good with a little bit deeper cuts too, good work though...

nice tips, without real pics to use a guide I will take your advice. I am thinking of starting over on these picks as I now have some better info.
These pics are going into the vault in my shop and be used to laugh at later.

Is it possible that my picks get stuck inside the guts? and I see the word' hook' in ref to picks. Not sure how to use it. Should i make some? what do they look like

you may be able to use your half-diamond and turn it into a hook, and your rake just cut the cuts you have a little deeper and it should work...just dont make it so it is too thin...check this link...its about the best you can find for what you need....if you dont have a printer just hold up a ruler to the screen and resize the window untill the line matches and trace it or compare your pick by eye...http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p251/mjwhit/Firsttemplates.png

I looked at the link, my 1/2 diamond is close, however, I didn't think the rake was that deeply cut. I have lots of material to play with to make that hook, still unsure what I do with it. Is it for single pin picking or exploring...both

well the best way I can think to explain the hook is a "Swiss Army Knife" of picks it can do, like you said SPP, exploring, the back(rounded side) can be used as a "pull through" rake to set a few pins....it can do things I dont even know about Im sure ....but really it can do anything you want it to.(mostly used for SPP though)
