Sargent 10

Postby nooj » 11 May 2008 22:48

I have a Sargent 10 lock in front of me that I traded for, but I can't get this thing to open. I can pick it while it's unlocked, but when I lock it, I just can't do it. Are there some unknown properties to this lock that I don't know about when it's locked?

Any help would be appreciated.

The pins will bind the same, the only difference may be you will need to adjust the ammount of tension.

Thanks for the reply.
I tried it again and when about 4 pins are set, the cylinder shifts about a noticeable 2-3 degrees. To the point that I can take out the tension wrench, and the cylinder will stay put.
Is this some sort of trap? Or should I just keep at it?

Ok, sounds to me like it could be binding and could use some lubrication.
Try cleaning out the lock with some brake cleaner spray, followed by a little powdered graphite.

The slight movement of the plug could be the pins false setting, try easing off on the tension a little and push the pin up!

Best of luck

I don't know about that specific lock but sounds like the cylinder is not spring loaded. Does the cylinder and key rotate to the locked position when you close the shackle (after unlocking it.)

My guess would be that pins are false setting and/or the lock isn't spring loaded (I'm talking about the shackle latching mechanism, and not the springs that push up on the shackle.)

If you decide to lubricate it you could check out this thread:

Firsty I would try if I were you is picking the lock (to where it rotates like you said) and then while keeping the tension on, pushing down on the shackle.
