Bulk SC-1 keys not working

Postby J-Hood » 19 May 2008 21:34

Not sure where to put this but I figured it does have to do with locks soo...

Anyway my shop has had a recent issue with keys in the bulk packs of SC-1 x03 having milling problems. Basically the keys were either very tight or did not go in at all. It is interesting to note that the keys fit in F-series and the 100, 300, and new 500 series deadbolts but not the 600 series or the off brand SC-1 cyls like by Arrow or LSDA. It seems that Arrow and LSDA make a better Schlage keyway than Schlage.

Anybody else have issues in the last month like this?? We ended up with about 40-50 bad blanks in 2 different 250 count bulk packs so far...

Schlage are making their product in Mexico y'know......quality has been dropping for years.

With the reduced value in the US$ I suggest that quality control in Mexico might have taken a beating.

Yeah I know but it is not their cheap locks that have the issue, those keyways are plenty wide. HAHAHA It is the bulk keys, though for the life of me I can't remember whose they are.

what brand of keys are you buying?

As a general rule most aftermarket keyways are deliberately made a bit bigger to make sure the blanks will slide in. Most aftermarket blanks are made a bit smaller to ensure they will fit into the keyway. However sometimes things don't quite work that way. I haven't had any major problems like that though, except with the OSCAR blanks that come with new key machines.

I've been noticing a similar problem with the new Kwiksets and some aftermarket key blanks.

Maybe its regarded as a different keyway perhaps called SC1T with the t standing for thick. Or maybe someones caliper was off that day when they were manufactured

Its surprising that Jet blanks aren't working properly as they are quite reputable. I know that schlage is trying to do away with the SC1 keyway, because its one of the most copied keyways out there. Apparently they're working on developing a new flagship keyway. Maybe they are trying to dissuade the use of the C keyway by making inferior blanks? Seems like a bit of a longshot though.

That was supposed to be the Everest Key that was their new one. Don't know what happened.

I've got an entire box of unknown brand IC CORE 1A1L1 that is just like that.
it won't go in. I have no idea who makes them. It's in a white unmarked box of 50 and each blank is marked 1A1L1 but no marking as to who made them.

Not even ILCO is quite up to OEM fit. The ILCO 1A1K1 fits K, but it also enters some Best L and M even though it shouldn't. This has never happened with OEM Best blanks.

There's clearly difference in third party and OEM.

Both of these keys are supposed to enter the IC CORE K keyway.
Well, they both do.

But the top one(Ilco) enters an M keyway too and it is NOT supposed to. The bottom one(OEM) is positively blocked out from entering an M keyway. They look similar but different enough to be functionally different.

I thought Jet was made somewhere in europe. Only one I know for sure is made in Mexico is JMA. But then again even the real Schlage locks are made in Mexico now.
