old post box lock - can anyone help me source?

Postby horsefeathers » 27 May 2008 10:12

Took this lock off an old Post Office box (UK) which was mounted outside some old building. The owner had lost key for it, and I was going to make a key to suit but when I opened it up I found that the bolt stump was cracked and bent nearly off. It is 5 lever and the curtain revolves 360 degress (securefast style) as a matter of interest. Does anyone have one of these lying about or know where I can source one. It is made by Chubb and dated 1970. I spoke to Chubb who quite frankly were not able to help (as if the person I spoke to had any clue what I was on about).

It measures appox 77mm x 39mm

Post a pic of the stump - you may be best doing a repair rather than trying to source a replacement. Brass is a pretty forgiving material to braze or solder...

For a new one (if they will sell to you) you need to speak with Chubb High Security locks in Wolverhapton. Their details are on the net. They do pop up on ebay quite frequently too. Or as others have said just make and silver solder in a new stump - easy.

thanks guys - the customer has the lock in his possession now. He doesnt strike me as the kind to spend alot of cash on the project, but I thought i would see if I can source an old replacement lock for him. Not only would I have to reconstruct the stump but then I would have to handmake a key. I somehow dont think he wants to spend that much on getting it working again!
