How much money would you say you have spent buying locks to pick? And what lock if you could only buy one would you buy?

~30$ for picks (bought for me by GF)
~50$ for locks (kwik set double deadbolt, several padlocks, and some discounted locks from the restore)

i want the brinks gold padlock from walmart (it includes a decoder and a repining kit) ~12$

This is one of my cheapest hobbies by far. I would guess my total is about less than 200 dollars.

Are we just talking locks and picks? Or all hobby related equipment? I have an ITL code machine that I paid about $2000 for alone.

As a total hobby, I am guessing that I am around $7000-$8000.

Just on locks, not near that.

Locks 1500 @ ~$3 each = $4500

+ RKS cutaway = $400

+ 3 flights to Holland = $2000

+ 2 flights to Vegas = $800

+ Various pin kits, car tools, pick guns, security pin kits, cases, tackle bags = $500

+ Picks = $1100

+ Safes = $100 (never got much into those)

Total: $7600

And that does not include costs I've incurred sponsoring research or any costs associated with the magazine. And even as I'm finishing this post I'm remembering other items I forgot to include on this list, such as my collection of Assa Abloy model racing yachts and the 200 pieces of door hardware that didn't include any locks, much to my disappointment. I'm fairly confident those figures would get me dangerously close to, if not surpassing, the 10k mark.

Cost of this hobby, hmmmm, i'd say it's running right up there with the cost of legal separation/divorce if I keep it up and am not bringing any money in from it.

I'm somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000 but that includes some tools and equipment that I also use for locksmithing. That does not include locks that I purchased for resale as part of my business. If I include the expenses for my upcoming Defcon trip it'll definitely push the total amount over $15,000.

So far, I'm still on the cheap side for the hobby part of locksmithing. I'm probably only at $100 for the locks, $500 for all of my picks and $100 for my tools, but that number is starting to go up fast.
