Free pins, just had to ask

Postby SnoopJeDi » 15 Jul 2008 22:15

I'm not a big fan of Home Depot. The strong-arm nature is a bit of a turn-off, and all the ones around here have started getting rid of veteran discounts (my pop is a vietnam vet, and got the discount for years, and they just all of a sudden stopped one day, and gave him some BS reason).

But I guess you can't really avoid them. So I went into a Home Depot today (having already been to an Ace with no luck) to try and find a rekey kit for the Kwikset lock I just bought yesterday. I'm a freaking klutz, so I buggered up two of the springs real good, effectively making a 5-pin cylinder a 3-pin.

They didn't have the kit, and I couldn't find small springs anywhere. But I always ask in situations like that, so I did just that. The girl obviously said, no, we don't have any, but then she went on to remark that the store itself does most rekeying for customers, walked me over to the key center, opened the rekey box, and let me have at it, free of charge.

I scored double what I needed in springs, and, under the impression that I was rekeying an entire lock, she also let me grab 5 pins (including two spool pins). So now, my kwikset entry no-security lock is now two locks, including some spool pins to cut my newbie teeth on.

Never hurts to ask! :D

I'm glad you had luck, but generally speaking even if an employee hands you a product and tells you to put it in your pocket it's still technically stealing.
I hate to be a wet blanket, but just be careful about this kind of sweathearting from anyone behind the counter as it could backfire on you.
Kind of a crummy welcome, huh?

Nah, you're right. I offered to have her ring me up for a few dollars, and she even double-checked with a supervisor across the aisle. Neither of them really wanted to be assed with it.

Besides, reading the forum, I get the impression that kwikset equipment doesn't hold very much value

Kwiksets can be good locks. Pop a couple security pins in one and they make for some good picking. Kwikset smartkeys are good locks. The reason there is so much smack talk about KW is because they are fairly open keyways, fairly common, and frequently immitated locks.

And in general their tolerances are a bit loose compared to a Schlage, however, as Tooly points out, the smartkey (their new line) is a good lock and has won a lot of us over. They completely abandoned the pin tumbler and invented something new.

From a certain view point this is true. The three main lock brands used in our area are Kwikset (and copy cats), Schlage and Arrow.

I hate Arrow, the bolts for their deadbolt locks frequently fail and cause lockouts where even the key won't open the lock. Schlage can do this too but it's much more rare. Kwiksets seems to have the longest life span. I've only seen one or two bolt or latch fail to work properly and this was on locks with 30+ years on them.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Be Careful At Home Depot - A 'heads up' for those of you who may be regular Home Depot customers.

Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out Shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends.

Here's how the scam works:

Two very hot 20-21 year-old girls come over to your car as you are Packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a Rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they Say 'No' and instead ask you for a ride to another Home Depot. You agree and they get in the backseat.

On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I have had my wallet stolen June 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th and 29th. Also July 1st, 5th, twice on the 8th, 16th, three times last Saturday and very likely again this weekend.

So tell your friends to be careful.

P.S. Walmart has wallets on sale 2.99

Ladies and gentlemen I am here to present the award for the year's most gullible LP101 member. There are many deserving applicants for the award this year but one stands above the rest.

And the winner is..................... Braveheart!!!! :P
