What Constitutes a High Security Lock?

Postby PickFree » 31 Jul 2008 19:52

Hi all. I'm new on the forum and have been enjoying reading all the topics around, some good stuff. However something confused me, i understand certain forums are locked until you can prove you need access (and for good reason). I have no issue with this. What i'm confused over is what locks constitute being to secure to be discussed on the open forums?

I'm a little scared to post anything about one of them in case i get my topic deleted and a bit of a talking to lol.

I believe its locks that include electronic combinations, and safe locks, etc. Stuff that isn't a standard door lock or a master lock.

yeh, pretty much anything above "standard" locks such as kwikset/master and whatnot, or anything that would involve a lock that normally is used to secure highrisk stuff like monies n stuffs o.o least that's my understanding.

Would that mean discussing medeco brand or various dimple locks be out of the question?

you won't get in trouble, they'll just let you know it's a high sec topic and lock the thread usually, as highsec discussions are for the advanced forum, which i hope to dive into sometime, as im saving up for medeco lock =3

Pretty much any lock is open to posting breakdowns and general techniques. "Advanced" lock discussion would involve any bypass info or detailed discussion about locks that secure things like vending machines and the like.

Ahh ok, that's a shame as i have been given 3 vending machine locks lol, a friend takes apart and does up the old arcade machines and i asked if he had anything lying around. I've failed to open them so far but i guess i'll have to wait on the advanced section.

Thanks for the clarification legion.

4 wheel combo

Postby raimundo » 1 Aug 2008 6:27

I have seen them try to make some locks 'high security' and post only in the advanced section when it was actually a lock with low security and a significant vulnerability, such as the four wheel combo locks, which can easily be opened with a tool faster than you can set the combo and open it. This was security through obscurity in action. I will usually say my piece when I see this happening.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

It's more a matter of what the locks are used to secure. Embassies, ATM's, Arms lockers, coin boxes, safes, etc. will tend to use a certain class of lock, and we don't discuss the details of opening those in the open.
If someone is securing their vending machine with a 4-wheel luggage lock that's quite unusual and it's their own darn problem :-).
