Reputable online dealers for key blanks?

Postby ridinplugspinnaz » 1 Oct 2008 11:51

I've been looking around on the internet for the past few days at various websites that offer key blanks, but I can't seem to find any one site that has everything I'm looking for. I'm trying to do a small batch order for blanks from ubiquitous keyways like the M1, to less common stuff like finding brass blanks for various BEST keyways; most everyone I've found so far only sells nickel-silver Ilco-style blanks.

Anyway, when you need a wide selection of blanks from a reputable dealer, where do you point your browsers to? I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Thats where I order my blanks from. :D Forget places like FB, eBay or Lockpicks.com, mysecuritypro.com carries good quality Ilco blanks at a cost thats closest to locksmith wholesale distributors then anywhere else I've seen.

Actually, has anyone ordered from CLK Supplies before? Looking at their BEST blanks, they are half(!) as cheap as the mysecuritypro site, with a much much smaller minimum order requirement of 10 blanks. No graduating scale where it gets cheaper when you order more, you get the lowest price for any number of blanks ordered it seems.

Here's the site: http://www.clksupplies.com/

Hard to tell whose blanks they sell, but in the case of the BEST keys at least, I suspect they're the Ilco brand, since they're also nickel-silver. No brass unfortunately, which is what I was really hoping to find. Speaking of which, am I going to have any harder a time cutting a nickel-silver key with an impression file than a brass one? That's my main concern with blank selection.

If they carried Jet, Ilco or Bianchi I would buy from them. I'm really picky about key brands now a days cos a while ago I ordered some H75 blanks from lockpicks.com and found out the hard way that they only carry JMA keys. Thats fine for house keys and such but the quality of the H75 JMA blanks I got were so poor I never want to buy auto key blanks made by them again.

Do they check your "professional status" at clk? Thats kind of the reason I order from mysecuritypro cos they don't ask questions (even though I work as a lockie and shouldn't have any problems if they did).

Well, I haven't ordered from them yet, but the price is certainly right, so I think I'll be placing a small order with them to test the waters. I'll post in here about my experience (whether they check your status, or if it matters for key blanks), and I'll do my best to post some pics of the blanks I get so that those of you more in the know can identify the manufacturer. I'm guessing that only reputable mfgrs even make the BEST blanks, but I'll be ordering some Master M1s too, and hopefully that'll tell us something about the types of blanks they stock for common cylinders.

Stay tuned!

Oh yeah, and if someone could offer some advice on how much more difficult (if at all) nickel-silver blanks are to cut with an impressioning file than good old brass blanks, I'd really appreciate the input. Ideally I would like to know before I place an order anywhere. Thanks!

I have ordered from CLK supplies but do not any longer. Last couple of orders were not right and their customer service leaves alot to be desired. They will not answer the phone and the answering machine message was wishing me a merry christmas, I called in June.

Can you elaborate on what wasn't right about the orders? I haven't ordered yet (in part because of your 'nay' vote for them) but I have a really small order in mind so I may do it yet, just on account of the small sum of money for the order. It would be nice to hear how they screwed up your order, though.

One more thing about CLK I noticed is that their site lets you separate blanks by mfgr; they do carry some JMA blanks but in theory at least, you can weed those out easily.

They sent me the wrong product. The mistake was actually to me benefit because what I got was much more expensive. I still wanted to get the item back to them and get what I ordered.

Contacting them was not easy and they are not friendly to deal with, even when trying to give them their expensive products back.

I see. Not a few minutes after I posted about sorting by manufacturer, I also noticed that most of the blanks they sell are JMAs, except for perhaps the absolute most common keyways like KW1s and M1s. Now I guess I know why their prices were supposedly so much better!

I would not recommend nickel silver blanks for impressioning if you are just starting out. However if you have a good amount of experience impressioning you may get by ok but I find the marks harder to see.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
