cant get a lock open!

Postby savs2k » 3 Oct 2008 17:27

i am having problems picking a lock. I am still really really new to everything. I have a been a lurker for a long long time and decided tis time to start posting finally. Anyways i only have a few locks i practice on. Some masterlocks and a few extra gun locks i had left over. I can pick all the locks except one. It was a free gun lock i got from the police station. The reason i am having trouble with this lock specifically is that all the other locks i have picked use a one sided key. This lock i can't pick uses pins on both sides. The reason i cant pick it is with a tension wrench in the lock, after i pick one side i dont have room to get to the other pins because the tension wrench is in the way. 5 pins each side and its a really cheap lock. Is there a special tension wrench to use for this kind of lock?

A wishbone or double tension wrench is what you need. I have the one from here www.lockpicktools.com It's good priced and works very well.

When you click on "products" next to the link for tension tools is the picture of what you need.

so there would be no way to use a normal tensioner on this type of lock?

Are you sure it's a pin-tumbler lock? Sounds more like a disk tumbler.

As for a tension wrench for it, take a safety pin. Cut the point and the clasp off it. Bend the ends 90deg to one side (both the same direction) so you can insert them into the keyway at each end.

You now have a double-sided tension wrench. :D

Put your standard wrench in the top of the keyway and if it is like most free double sided gun locks there is no warding in the keyway so you could then either rake it with a ball, double ball, etc or SPP it with a hook.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
