Today's Haul :-D

Postby ridinplugspinnaz » 3 Oct 2008 20:48

Up to now, one thing has been sorely missing from my lockpicking hobby, and that was lots of locks to practice on... not after today, though! I cruised the local ReStore, as well as a local construction reclamation business. $18.50 later, here's what I ended up with:

Image

Not too bad at all if you ask me :D Looks like I ended up with several Kwikset cores, two or three Schlage cores. I'm pretty certain that the two deadbolts with holes on the right-hand side (pictured mid-right, just in front of the TITAN) are Weiser cores, based on their enclosures... correct me if I'm wrong, please.

The best part, though? The Yale deadbolt and the TITAN KIK. Both brand new with all the hardware included! The deadbolt next to the Yale also came with hardware, but was obviously a used lock. On top of that, the TITAN is a 6-pin core, and as far as I know, it comes loaded with some security pins too, which was a really pleasant surprise.

All in all, I'd say it was a pretty darn good day. :D 13 locks for $18.50, two of which were new-in-box. $1.42 per lock. Moral of the story: if you need cheap locks to practice on, hit up your local ReStore!

That is a great haul for the money. Now with a plug follower, some pinning tweezers and a pack of spool pins and some serrated pins and some extra springs you will be set for a bit as you can use pins from all of the kwikset type locks and pin in high low combos and with the above mentioned security pins you can add even more of a challenge.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Yeah, one of the main reasons that I went ahead and bought so many of the kwikset cylinders (instead of just a few) was so that I could cannabalize the pins from them to rekey some of the better-working cylinders with mean bittings. That way I won't have to buy a pinning kit for a little while, but I can act like I have one anyway :D

Some other thoughts, this is the first time I've played with a Schlage cylinder, and that little uptick on the warding for those keyways is kind of annoying. Some of these locks also makes me wish I had a small wood block to mount them in, maybe I'll look into that down the road.

Wow $10 / 25 locks? that is ridiculous! I dunno what you guys are doing in southern california, but keep it up... the ReStore I visited only had a few locks; that construction reclamation store I mentioned seemed to have significantly more, but they were also in a much wider range of condition.

One thing I reaaaally wanted from the reclamation store was one of those combination pushbutton access systems that I found mounted in a door. This is hard to describe, but it's one of those systems with the numbers 1-5 in a row, just above the doorknob, and you key the combo in the right order to gain access. It also had a BEST core in the knob. It would've been a great find, but there really was no way for me to actually get the hardware out of the door, so that sucked. I would've traded all my cylinders that day for that lock!

You're talking about the KABA-MAS pushbutton combo locks (or similar). Those are surprisingly expensive, so grabbing one for real cheap would be amazing. Personally I gave up on fighting with people on ebay for those...

Most excellent, I'm having trouble finding a good practice lock myself, but those look perfect.

For what it's worth, the one in this particular door felt very broken (the action on the pushbuttons was terribly loose, no solid clicks or anything). Heck, the BEST core alone would've been worth it for me, but I guess it wasn't in the cards. Maybe I should go back and try to work on it :D

Thats a good idea. those are deceptively expensive, and for the prices restores charge, you could by the whole door :p

Heck, you could buy a door and mount locks in it...hmmm...I need a car =p
