Question about Yale 627 padlock...

Postby lock_assassin » 5 Sep 2004 20:35

Picked up this padlock with key at a local garage sale for 10 cents. I haven't tried picking it yet but it has a rectangular insert in the bottom of the housing where the cylinder is. Does anyone know if this can be removed to allow the cylinder to be taken out and even rekey the cylinder? I opened the lock but did not see any screws or release tabs inside of the shackle hole. I searched here and on the net but did not find any info on this padlock. It appears to have 4 pins (8 total) from what I can tell. Don't know if any are spools, etc. though. Once I try picking it I should know for sure!

Any help is appreciated!

Are you positive it's only a 4 pin? Not trying to be smart or anything, but it looks like it may be five. Being that there's a plate like that, it should be removable.

I'm also guessing again but it appears that the padlock is already unlocked. You may want to have a look around the edges of the keyway and see if you can view the retaining device.

I would bet that there is a way to remove that plate, but without more information (which I couldn't dig up either) my only suggestion would be to drill a couple of small explorator holes (and I'd spend more time digging for info if I were you.)

If you've seen the bottom of an American 1100 series padlock, or even the rekeyable Master padlocks, you'll get an idea of where to drill. Use the smallest bits you have just in case though, if you decide to go that route.

Thanks for the info Varjeal. You are correct that it is already open. I counted the cuts on the key and there were only 4. I can't believe I couldn't find any info on this lock on the web, but I will keep looking for sure. I can see the rotating mechanism at the end of the keyway but nothing that would release the cylinder or block. I stuck a very small pick in there and tried to move a couple of pieces but nothing happened. I will look for diagrams on the other 2 locks you talked about to see how they work.

Thanks again for the help...
