Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

need the name of a lock i only got a look at

Postby Dak » 17 Oct 2008 20:30

So i went down to my local lockie today and was shown a medeco that looked about the size of a cannon ball. It was a padlock and I am hoping that this is enough information to get a name (price?).

Well assuming you're exaggerating about it being as big as a bowling ball and you just mean it's a huge padlock, there are a couple of possibilities. Medeco makes several different padlocks but their shrouded one is pretty beefy. Depending on which of their padlocks you're talking about, prices range from around $90 to $150 for a new one.

There are other companies that make padlocks which can also be retrofit with Medeco cylinders. One of the most well known ones are the military padlocks made by S&G which have medeco cylinders in them. I'm no expert on them but I think the 833 may be their biggest one. The cheapest I've seen those sell for is around $100 for a used one, but I've seen them sell for over $300 or $400. Squelchtone collects them, I imagine he'll chime in here with some quality pics so you can see if that's the one you mean.

to be more specific when the key is turned the shackle can be literally pulled out. It is not as big as a bowling ball but it is indeed an enormous padlock.

If you were in person at that locksmith why didn't you ask HIM the name and price? Why are you asking us for the name and price? btw.. I have a big car in the driveway, can someone tell me what make and model it is and how much I paid for it?

Please invest in a cameraphone, or use better words than cannon ball. Was it in reality just bigger than the typical lock that you are use to? (such as a high school master combination padlock?)

Was it really made by Medeco or did the key just say Medeco? and what was big about it? the long adjustable shackle or the body? did it look round? or was it like a normal padlock with a brass bottom and a silver shackle?

was it like this?

or if not like any of these, please find a photo or draw a picture using Paint or gimp or photoshop.

my apologies for my vagueness.

I was shone this lock and was not intellegent enough to ask for the name nor price. Basically my aim here is I want to buy a medeco lock preferrably one with their famous sidebar, and when I went to my local locksmith he showed me a rather large lock that was gray. The keyway was covered by the lock itself partly. I didn't really want to buy it so I didnt ask for information. On my way home I became curious so here I am.

The only pressing question is what is a medeco lock (padlock preferred) that wont break my budget?

As opposed to their infamous sidebar?

you say that when the key is turned, the cylinder can be pulled out,
this makes me think you are talking about what is sometimes called a hockey puck lock, and the cylinder cannot be removed, just pulled out a bit, as it is connected directly to the "shackle" if thats what its still called on a hockeypuck.

It sounds like you're possibly describing a Medeco G8R padlock (used primarily for vending machines)?

There aren't so much as 'names of any' as model numbers or series.

What is your budget? a Medeco padlock will cost you $60-$150 dollars depending on model.

This is as low as it gets for a brand new one online:
http://www.medecodeals.com/Medeco-m3-IndoorOutdoor-Padlock-With-516-Shackle-wKIK-Cylinder_p_101-255.html

But if your budget is $20, then your expectations are set too high for owning a medeco padlock unless the ebay gods smile upon you.
