Can I get a dead bolt lock at walmart?

Postby neo7333 » 22 Oct 2008 16:20

Walked 2 miles to a hardware store only to find out the employers are rude and they dont have padlocks or deadbolts, do you think walmart have>?

Im trying to get a kwickset to practice on, take it apart and just put one pin in and learn like that. BTW any good guide out there that deals with kwicksets? Ive seen one but its not very good.

thanks

yes, walmart will have locks. they should have some kwikset knock offs, as well as cheap padlocks. there is a guide on here somewhere about kwikset dissassembly if I remember correctly... although if you read about the basics, you should be able to figure it out. might want to pick up a 1/2 inch wooden dowel while you are there, you can cut off a 3 inch length to use as a plug follower.

You should be able to find some kind of cheap deadbolt at Wallymart. Or at any big hardware store. Any type will do, just get the cheapest for now.
It's usually easy to get them apart, you will need to have the key in so you can remove the plug. There should be some kind of simple retainer or maybe snap ring that can be removed from the back with pliers. Work slow and watch for flying springs.

Once you get it apart, take some time and study the lock a bit. Try to understand how the pin stacks work and when you put it together be careful not to damage the springs.

goto walmart and get a double deadbolt kwikset (or off brand). i got mine for about 12$, because i got the double deadbolt.

single deadbolt is like 8-10 so spend a few more dollars and you get 2 locks to play with ;)

if i remember correctly, the brinks deadbolt IS a kwikset knockoff. should have esentially the exact same keyway.

You'd be surprised. It may not be a brand we normally associate with retail store house locks, as Americans are so use to Kwikset and Schlage, but the Brinks locks at Walmart are actually pretty good. Spool pins, balanced stacks, anti drill inserts.

They're owned by Hampton Products International, which also sells Walmart's low ends locks under the brand Mountain Security.

From the Brinks double cylinder deadbolt I recently bought, I can tell they've improved their product over the last year, and even though the new Kwikset Smartkey is leaps and bounds above the original Kwikset design, the current Brinks model is better made than the old Kwiksets ever were.

So for all us telling you to go pick a Kwikset first, you can also go get this Brinks from Walmart, it's the same KW1 keyway profile, but actually has spool pins to give you some challenge, and I believe it costs less than a real Kwikset (non smartkey version)

huh - might have to pick one up to check out now. but now that you mention it, squelchtone - It does seem that many of the "knock offs" with the kw1 profile in my collection do have a spool pin or two. not so much the case with the majority of authentic kwiksets - however, i haven't bought a new kwikset in I don't know how long... definately gotta pick up the smart key one of these days, though!

I just went to wal mart last night and picked up a brinks deadbolt ($12), for practice with spool pins. Does anyone know for sure if you can rekey them?

Sweet, it took me all of maybe 15-20 min to remove (oh I didnt have a pin follower so I used a permanent marker lid, worked great! ), and move around some pins, for practice. Just for starters I removed 2 pins, and left 3 in, two of which are spools. Im still having trouble with them, so time to practice.
