Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

wohoo I now have a laser cut lock but... can i play with it?

I just pulled out the ignition on one of my race cars since I dont need it anymore. The car is now a track only car and will not ever be driven on the street again. Its a lasercut key and while I was looking inside I can see the pins. The pins look very thin and I don't think i should be trying to pick it (or at least try to) because it looks like it could snap easier then my picks sadly. While I wait for my app for advance to go through, would it be ok to play around with this lock or should I just wait until I can learn more about it after getting approved? I don't want to talk about the lock or anything I just want to know if the pins are easier to mess up then normal locks so I can save myself the trouble of ruining a good lock. I have the key right here with it but it's so temping to try to play with.

I cant give you much on picking it except that it is possible, there are a lot of special tension wrenches for these types of locks, made in the orient mostly.

I would only say that you shouldn't worry about breaking it, if your picks are sanded smooth, on the working edges, (eliminate the sharp 90 degree edges) and then you can be fairly sure you won't mess it up unless you are really using heavy handed picking, and with these locks, heavy handed wont get it picked anyway

Look at the Key, does it look delicate? it lifts those pins all the time. learn as much as you can from looking at that key, the deepest depths, etc, and make a very well sanded pick for it.

thanks raimundo I was a bit uneasy about trying to play with this lock only because I doubt I will be taking any more ignitions out of such a new car. It's from a 2005. The key looks fairly simple. It looks like 2 normal keys glued on a metal plate and called "lasercut".
