Postby joshuasoileau » 19 Jan 2009 21:30

i have a lock and key and want to make a copy of it. But i cant find a blank key. The key is cut on the bottom like a regular key and cut on the side also. I looks like two keys stuck together. :? where can i find a blank at online.

I'm holding something in my hand, what am I holding?

What company makes your lock and please show us a picture of the key and what country are you from. It sounds like you have a sidebar lock like an ASSA Twin or Schlage Primus.

Thank You,

Squelchtone.

I think he is European, as he says "regular key cuts on the bottom of the key"...

I doubt you'll be able to get a blank online because of the sidebar cuts. Your best bet is going to a locksmith and hoping they carry ASSA blanks and can make the side cuts.

Assa Twin 6000 keys are restricted and not sold online or at places like Home Depot or Ace Hardware.

This is to prevent an employee of a company or a non employee from making his own copies of important keys that he has limited access to, or someone who wants to make a duplicate so another person who was not issued a key can have one.

There are many many many sidebar combinations and key blank profiles, and you would need a number from that key to figure out what blank that system uses. My key says 62-600 on it, and another one of my ASSA keys says 545 on it. What does you key say, and could you take a photo with better focus and both sides of the key?

Some free advice: If this is not your lock, and you happen to have been issued a key to it, I'd abandon this project, because lock companies make such restricted keys for this exact reason, so people cannot find blanks, and therefore cannot make illicit copies. If I am incorrect and this is your lock and it is not mounted in a door and being used to secure a room or building, then I ask that you show us a photo of the lock. I think thats a fair request to determine if we should be helping you, which we will be happy to do if everything checks out.

Really sorry but i had to laugh! And to the OP, as everyone says, if this is a key you have been given as part of your job dont try to duplicate it as it may get you fired, you shouldnt practice on a lock thats in use either(sorry if its been said) otherwise some clearer pictures will help the guys to help you  :D
if everyone who tried something new liked it but didnt bother telling anyone else there would never be anything new to try...

Good point WOT, although it can be annoying when your gf wants a key and you have to pay the rental office $75 for a copy of a Medeco key, when it costs $12 for the copy.
