Tooly's advice is spot-on. It is exactly what I would have said about using the standard thickness picks first and then the thinner ones when you are comfortable using them, use the thinner ones for the more restricted keyways.
The reason for doing it that way, is that when you start out, you tend to put more force into the picks than they can take and they break inside the lock. Conversely, if you use a think pick or rake on a lock that has relatively large tolerances in it, you can get the pick stuck if it slips between the insides of the lock, or even between the tension wrench and lock.
