Well I'm wondering if a pin tumbler lock core is a good practice lock. Heres a picture of it:
Am I able to take it with me to places like school and practice with it?
thanks.

I dont know if you can take it to school, but a Small Format Interchangeable Core is indeed pocket sized. Though, its probably not the best lock to learn on, probably will take a while for you to get picking down. Also, you should be aware that many SFIC come uncombinated, so you will have to find a locksmith to key it up for you.

Well this one in the picture comes different keyed. I already can open 6 pins and such so its not for learning but for increasing my speed.

If you're confident in your ability then, by all means, go after a Falcon SFIC. Falcon makes a good lock with some tight machining tolerances. Plus, you get to practice on two shear lines with a single cylinder (That's right it's Two, Two, Two locks in one!) If they use an SFIC system at your school I would recommend getting a padlock body to install it in. Just looks less suspicious to the administration than carrying around a cylinder that may have been stolen from one of their locks. An Abus 83/45 SFIC lock housing will set you back about $16 but they're pretty solid locks. I've got 83/45's with Schlage cylinders securing my tool boxes and the back yard gates.

For the love of all that is holy, make sure you get a padlock body that is completely different from anything your school uses.

I started on these myself, the BEST brand though, They are definently good practice but can be a pain if they are old and worn. Try to avoid one of the paracentric keyways right off the bat since your tools may not be able to fit in the keyway. Padlock is a very good idea, or you could get a rim cylinder to put it in. I've found that schools are the worst possible place to practice picking in. Administrators tend to over react and its a good way to get your picks taken away and/or confiscated if you school has a campus cop. Then imagine the freak out of the parental units when the school calls them, wont be fun at all.

I suppose I should pay more attention to what I type. The Abus SFIC pad lock is an 83IC/45. I believe all the Abus 83 series locks are re-keyable though. I use the 83IC/45 because they cost less than Best Padlock bodies and I think they are a more solid lock.

its a okay lock to practice on, but try not to practice in public, and really dont practice at school. with the way schools are these days getting your picks taken away would be the least of your worries if your caught.
