Some cutaways I made today

Postby SnowyBoy » 24 Feb 2009 15:56

I had the run of a machine today at a friends workshop. I made a couple of cutaways!

Going to be going back tomorrow to cutaway all the 3KS cylinders I have, an abloy 362 & another 330. Going to experiment with machining the basket for the discs so you can see all the movement.

Oh, nice work!
I want to do that to my Abus 65/50 but I'm not exactly sure how to do it, I read Snowyboy's guide on how to dismantle a padlock and Jebus's on how to disassemble a padlock.
The thing is that my Abus only got three pin caps, here I'll show you Image
Does that matter for cutting it or have I misunderstood something?

Looking at your photo you have more than 3! Between the two you have sunk on the right there is one more hiding there... and i can also see the faint outline of another one on the far right.

Try again, this time put the lock on a hard surface and get a peice of rod or a small metal screwdriver and place it dead centre between the two caps you have already sunk.... they will appear I can assure you.

 Yes I can see that on that picture now yes, I tried your method but I failed...
After drilling the small pilot hole I screwed in the screw and it somehow broke... Don't ask me how, was almost no pressure added or anything like it. Then I had to drill out the screw to try again, guess what! The drill broke inside the pilot hole and I had to drill that up as well... That's not all, the retainer bar bent inside the lock and jammed it completely ( I cut open the lock to figure out what happen, I also found out that all the pins were safety-pins! Four Spools and one serrated.)

Btw: Can't wait to see your cutaways!

That's harsh to hear you failed :(

You have to use a screw with a course thread to bite into the brass retainer.... and when you lift it, it has to be dead straight.

I took a padlock apart today in the fastest time for me.... 7 minutes, complete with the shackle.

I really went mad with the machine today! I managed to get done in 2 hours a test cut on my test abloy body for the ball bearing window, then I carried out the same cut on the duplicate, then I went ahead and cut the basket, then I done a bit on the EVVA cylinder and body, but failed a cut on the cylinder so the lock is only 1 sided which isn't a bad thing since you will be able to see the fingers on the opposite side (will be great to get a feel for and see for picking it), I also machined that pad i took apart in 7 mins.

All i have to do now is tidy the burrs with a scalpel and polish them to a high shine :D

Here is the EVVA :D

I did but I think the screw was damaged, what diameter is the pilot hole you drill?
Nice cutting by the way.

I just picked up a drill bit that looked smaller than the rod.

Thanks for the comments about the locks :) It's amazing what you can do with the right tools.

Speaking of which, here's the Abloy 330 Profile just rebuilt :)
