American 5260 - 5-pin to 6-pin conversion (Frankenlock)

Postby shatter » 6 Apr 2009 1:08

After watching a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV_UyiuPZAs&feature=channel_page) by wizwazzle (awol70) I was determined to turn my 5260 into a 6-pin lock working off its 5-pin factory key. Some time ago I made a post (http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=42322) asking for help obtaining the necessary pins required for the mod. I must have been a bit too rude in some of the replies because that thread didn't get me too far. The idea had almost completely left my mind until recently when le.nutzman gave me a handful of American 5200 padlocks that he had obtained through Uncle Sam. After dissecting a few of the locks, I managed to salvage the parts required. Here are some pictures I took along the way:

It turned out to be a fun little project. le.nutzman, you are the best. Thank you.

I got one 5260 american lock 5-pin factory key and whant
to try the same thing you did here,
but wondering if i am going to mess the lock like i did with the
1105 i add one more pin to make it 6 pins but the lock won't turn anywhere
and the key is stuck in there,so i don't want the samething happens to this
5260 lock by the way, how your project turn out the lock works ok after adding the 6 pin.

shatter,
i just want to confirm the correct pin height
.160 is a #5 pin for running off the keytip?
(i just eyeballed it...)
thanks.

,i think you may have used an incorrect pin height,
or you have made the mistake of re-inserting the plug with the keypins aligned with the drivers.(12:00)
this causes the driver from the first bible chamber to drop down into the sixth plug chamber....
(i think many people have probably done this,when breaking down/reassembling American locks,i know i did =/ )

I pulled it out of a cylinder that didn't have a key so I'm not sure what the exact pin number is. Also, the reading on the caliper may not be 100% accurate. It would fluctuate between .158" and .160".

Well i think that's what i did used an incorrect pin height and now the lock
won't turn anywhere or the pins won't move at all
thanks for your info let's see what can i do to remove the cylinder.
