Pin set, but still causes trouble...

Postby Bas2888 » 13 Apr 2009 15:14

The question I'm going to post here will probably plunge me back to newbie lvl. 1...

Today I've bought two Yale padlocks. About $15 UDS each, so no special security locks (lvl. 3, I believe they are).
The first one I've got in about 2 minutes. But when I got to the second one, I discovered, the first binding pin was the third pin. But when I set the pin, I can't get to the fourth and fifth pin anymore, because when I try to get past the third pin the key pin pushes up and I feel with my tension wrench that the lock wants to turn back then.

Does this mean that it is a very long key pin and I won't be able to pick this lock with standard equipment, or is it a false set where security pins are involved?

When my story isn't clear I'm willing to use my special MS Paint powers and draw you a picture

Thanks in advance,
Bas

Sounds like it could be a long pin. If you take a look at the key can you see a deep cut around the 3rd pin?

If that's the case and you need some more space, you could try using top tension: placing the wrench at the top of the keyway in front of the first pin. This is best achieved with a wrench that has been shortened in such a way that when you place it fully in the top of the lock it lies flush with the body (or thereabouts) and doesn't interfere with the first pin. This helps stop it pinging out or being at an awkward angle.

That should give you enough room to get a hook in and underneath the long 3rd pin to tackle the rest at the back of the lock.

Hope that helps :)

Sometimes I can just hit myself in the head for not thinking of things before asking...
I'll blame the late hour and the long Easter weekend!

Thanks Olson Burry! It has indeed a deep cut at the third pin and I will try to fabricate a simple tension wrench tomorrow...
