The sort of conditions MTL PIP stops working (pic)

Postby SnowyBoy » 6 May 2009 13:26

I got hold of an MTL from a friend today after years of asking for it. It's been padlocked to the back of his lorry body for years doing nothing because he could never find the key....

Well, I managed to get in to it in about 5 minutes with destructive techniques to the shackle and the cover plate (it's an E-Series).

So here is why my attempts at feeling around inside didn't work!

I filled it with WD40 and heated it up with my mini blow torch and still the pins were jammed with gunk. They came out in the end though :)

Will be a lovely cutaway, jsut a shame it's not a euro :(

Ahhhhhh, it was only a matter of time before someone questioned my motives xD I even considered re-wording it to not make it sound like I nicked it (what with no key and all).

It was worth the begging all this time though, I used to see it everyday and ask him and he would say 'no' just to be an arse (we often wind each other up over long periods of time like this). But today andn yesterday I helped him fit a gearbox to a truck, so tactfully asked him then and he said 'yes'.... result!

Obviously I got home super quick as this is my first PIP lock and I have had wonderful visions of how I am going to cut it away when I get one, but I was a bit dissapointed to find it was jammed up as I also had visions of picking it first time lol. But now it is in my hands & I've taken measurements, it seems as though my 'super duper trooper looper mega full cut' dreams will come true. All I need is a 1mm slot cutter ;)

And to all you doubters that have PM'd me sayaing about 'rotation hiding the pin cuts' when I said I would be cutting the outer pins...... it's under control, trust me, you are going to love this lock.

Updates will be added as soon as it's finished :)

I think Squelchtone meant the overall condition of the lock looked like it was found at the bottom of a river. (There was an interesting old lock found by a member on the banks of the Thames... can't find the post now though) Perhaps your friend has an amphibious vehicle?

Oh right lol I wondered why he mentioned the Thames.

Whilst I'm here I might as well post a pic of how far I am with the cutaway.

I made it double sided in anticipation for the cuts on the pins (so you can get a view of the inner pin no matter where it is positioned in the case).

Looks horrible in the photo.... will be rubbed down and highly polished when its finished :D

Yup, looks dreadful. The best thing to do at this point is box it up and mail it to me. :D

Since Mr. Ballard and I were separated at birth, you could send it to me to dispose of and it would be just like sending it to him.

Well! Have I got some bad news or what

Basically, I got wasted and thought it would be a good idea to make a cut on the MTL........ It's buggerd now.... I mean it still works, but the cut I made on the cylinder is hidden behind the buttresses of the case! "So why not cut the other side to show that side through the case?" i hear you cry.... I can't, because If I do there will be nothing supporting the other side and it will turn it into half a cylinder.

I'm quite jolly about the whole affair to be honest, it was a free lock, and it was good practice. I am definitely getting a euro next because the case on this was very thin and fragile.... it did actually snap on the thin buttress because of the factory drilled holes in the case.

Ah well, you live and learn xD If anyone has an MTL classin in euro form, PM me.

p.s Now I can have a go on the pins since they are surplus to requirement.... I only have a 1.5mm cutter which I was scared to use before I failed the cut, but now there's no worries :D

I had to have a go with the pins now to see if the 1.5mm is suitable, I'm not sure if I will get another cross cut with this cutter. I will have to wait for my 1mm to come and see.

Here's the pin anyway.

Oh yeah, before anyone points out the cut is slanted, it is.... I didn't pay any particular attention to lining it up in the vice since its a test pin 8)

I made a 3D MTL pin in inventor. I've been trying for two days to get it to function with the spring being adaptive but I can't :(

sweet! I have got to order one of these from you once you perfect the process..

and yes, I mentioned the Thames because that lock looked like it had been in a river for 50 years.

cheers,
