Master Keyed Corbin Russwin Dissmantled

Postby michaelspaz » 9 May 2009 5:50

I recently acquired my first door plug from a friend who bought a defaulted storage locker lot and found two Corbin Russwin plugs inside (which he was nice enough to give me since he had no use for them). I noticed a control key removal nub on the side of the lock but didn't have much knowledge about them other than that. After spending some time picking them I found some of the pins in one of he locks seemed "sticky" and gave low feedback and since I wanted to see how they worked I opened it up. Here is how it came out.

[edit]

Alternatively, I would be open to any creative methods that might be employed to remove the jammed pin as that slot is completely useless as is.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Bah, you're killin me, they still didnt work.. :-P

you cant use the [img] tag with a url to your photobucket slideshow, you have to right click each image and click View Image then copy that exact http://domain.com/whatever.jpg without anything after the .jpg

Like this for just an image: [img]http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww111/michaelspaz/Picture29.jpg[/img)

Or like this for a clickable thumb that takes us to a larger version: [url=http://s711.photobucket.com/albums/ww111/michaelspaz/Picture29.jpg][img]http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww111/michaelspaz/th_Picture29.jpg[/img)[/url)

but replace the last ) with a ] (i did that so you could see the code) BTW, HTML won't work here..

Here is your post fixed up: (click for larger images)

To the OP:
Ok, what you have is not a plug, it is a Corbin Russwin LFIC (Large Format Interchangeable Core) (at least that's what I call it, some may say it's a Corbin Russwin format, not just LFIC) You can simply refer to it as a core, but a plug is just one of the things in that picture. The plug is what the key goes into.

You're on your own for getting that pin and spring to come out, I don't work with these enough to know the tricks, but somebody here will.

good luck and thanks for sharing the pics,

I wish to voice this same opinion. A visible light amongst the fog of constant questioning. You keep it relevant when knowledge repeats itself into crap jokes. The 1 in a 1000 straight man with a voice. I think it might have something to do with experience.

Easiest way is going to be taking the thin capping strip off from the top and punching the pin through. If your careful you can reform the capping strip into a V shape and tap it back on to hold the pins in place. I usually key these up in this manner, because they sometimes call for very short drivers (.028 is a common top pin which is difficult to load in the conventional method).

How would you recommend removing the bible cap (if that is what it is called). I tried prying at it with a screw driver  to no avail. Perhaps someone could suggest a DIY tool around the house?

Also, thanks for the heads up on the preview button squelchtone. I'll take a look for it if I ever get another lock that I want to post pics of.

put that part in a vise. get a small slotted (flat head) screwdriver or an awl and a small hammer and tap the cover strip out. The screwdriver or awl should dig into the metal a little and then tap tap tippity tap and it will gradually push out until enough it is sticking out where you can use needle nose pliers to grab at it and pull it straight back to remove it all the way.

Once you get it shifted a little bit, a drop [DROP] of penetrating oil on each side of the rail will work in there and help it slide with less friction and potential for twisting damage once you start yankin' on it. :)
