Looking for information on a Master Lock 590D

Postby kstinson » 20 May 2009 2:48

I was out an about at the hardware store today and found a Master Lock 590D on the shelf so I decided to add it to my collection and for $8 I can't really complain as it has been quite the challenge. I think its more due to the bitting on the key as it doesn't feel like it has more than two security pins in it but none the less it takes some time to get this thing open. Does anyone have any knowledge of the actual pinning of this lock? Here is a pic for identification also.

Post some clear photos of the keys and we could tell you the pinnings pretty quick..

They're just a 4pin Master Lock with shackle protection. You don't find much fancy pinning in the $8 range, and this is no exception. No security pins. I've yet to see a 4pin Master with security pins - I start finding those in the 5pin locks.

I'd guess you have some extreme bitting which leads to it appearing tougher.

I just cut a 140 apart - I don't see any security pins in it unless you count the .003 off from each other as "security" ;)

Seriously - you have a 140 with security pins? This one doesn't have any.

Really? Very interesting. The Master 140 has always been held out to me at the perfect beginner security pin lock, which is supposed to have two spools. This is "knowledge" I have passed onto others, however I've always admitted with some embarrassment that I can't feel the spools in either of the ones I own. (And I've posted as much elsewhere on this board...) Now I'm going to have to cut one apart and see for myself. It would be a relief to discover I can't feel them because they aren't there.

Following up my own post... bad form...

Some google searches reveal people claiming they don't, some do. Jon King sez they "usually" do, which is pretty much good enough for me. Also interesting is the following video, where a guy has one he cut open and found 3(!) spools and a serrated(!!!)

This 590D doesn't feel like there are any serrated pins at all. I have a few locks with both serrated and spool pins. It does feel like there are a few spool pins but not all pins are spools. I can't "feel" any serrated pins. I definitely get a false set on this lock. There might be a serrated that is hanging me up, that I am not feeling. It certainly feels like a 4-pin but I am not sure how to tell just from the key if anyone could explain with pictures that would be great!

It's for sure that it's a four pin, according to Master:

# Shrouded shackle for superior cut resistance
# Solid brass body resists rust and corrosion
# 4-pin cylinder for extra pick resistance

Your absolutely correct I double checked and it is certainly a 4-pin cylinder. It's extremely easy to get it to a false set but after that I am not feeling any feedback in the tension tool at all. Normally I get a little reverse twist on the tension tool with my other spool pinned locks, for instance I have a few Brinks that do this. Don't get me wrong, I can get this lock to open. I can usually get it open in under a minute jiggling with a double half diamond pick, and I am sure a bogota rake would open it very quickly. Its the SPP that I am having trouble with. I am a SPP junkie, I would rather take an hour SPP'ing one of my locks even if I could defeat it quicker another way. Maybe I will have to pick up another and dissect one of them to see exactly what is hanging me up.
