Need help repinning Master 930

Postby shaothegreat » 7 Jul 2009 11:18

First let me start with a disclaimer:
I know I shouldn't have disassembled my lock before
knowing what I was doing. I'm sorry if any of this has
been asked before - I couldn't find the info I was looking
for. Yes, I am pretty new to all of this.

Ok, now that that's out of the way, my problem:

I took apart my Master 930 and basically hammered
all the springs.

A. Where do I buy new springs?

B. I (now) understand I need a follower to keep this
from happening again. Does anyone know of a cheaper
alternative to a $10 Master follower that I found on a
website?

C. Could someone maybe point me to a video that explains
the process in detail? I think I know what to do, but
now I'm a bit nervous about going at it again.

Thank you in advance to whoever can help -
Hopefully this is the last lock I goof up.

If you look online, there's a number of suppliers for re-pin kits for the Master and/or American brand locks. Both use compatible pins (American has more sizes, but the middle of the range overlaps 100% with master locks). You should find a kit like that for 45$ to 65$. Most of the kits include replacement springs.

Lock Pick Shop (the sponsor for this site) has the LAB Mini Dur-x kit for Master locks for ~60$ and it comes with a full set springs (and pins).

The official kits are cheaper though if you can find them (try eBay, they show up often.)

For a plug follower you only need a piece of tube / pipe of hard plastic / metal with the same diameter as the plug.
This will work on most locks. Some locks (like double euro cylinders) will require more tools for putting them back together again, but you'll figure that one out soon enough once you take on apart.
In that case a repinning kit might be really useful ;)

In the case of a master lock, the correct diameter is 0.398". If you can find it, the Master Lock #291 Pin Kit comes with a follower, the two sizes of wrenches, pins, springs, gauge and all. But list price is 90$ although actual price online will be lower (a quick google search turned up 57$)

There's no edit option, but the #291 kit comes with spool pins too...

Well... That was a bit more than I was planning on spending at the moment, but thanks anyway. When I have more money I think I'll invest in that master #291 kit. Until then - does anyone know if there's maybe like a universal spring size that I could cut down to make replacement springs for this thing???

Thanks,
Shao

I take apart masters and americans all the time (for explinations and displays) and I have never owned a follower or anything of the sort...

It is a pain in the butt but it can be done in about 5 minutes or so.

You use a piece of metal like a straightened bobby pin. I use my turning tool.

First put the srping and top pin in the hole closest to(what will be) the face of your lock. Then with your piece of metal push it down as far as you can by inserting your piece pf metal from the rear(away from the face of your lock) go over all the empty holes and push down on that one little pin sticking up. Next take your cylinder(empty), and you will see a notch in the back of the tailpiece that goes all the way around the simicircle tailpiece. That notch should fit or get real close to fitting on the end of yor piece of metal.
If it does not fit pefectly just slowly slide your piece of metal out and slide the plut in in one motion. Make sure your plug is only covering that one pin and not the second one... Now that was the hardest part.

As for the rest of the pins you put in the next spring and pin and push it down then slide the plug over it... Do it a few more times and your done...

Simply turn your plug so the top pin holes match the holes on the bottom of your cylinder and insert your new key then drop in your new bottom pins accortingly.

Once you get practice you can put all the springs and pins in at once and push them all down with the piece of metal and slide the plug in a bit quicker.

Words of caution:
Make sure your plug is going in so that the tail piece is covering the holes of your top pins. If the holes for the bottom pins meet the holes for the top pins your gonna have problems.

Good luck this is how i do it without a follower. It is annoying and tedious and I will be buying followers as soon as possible.

Have fun,
If you need pictures let me know and in a few days when I have another demonstration I will document it for you and post the pictures.

Hope it helped

This is the set I have and I haven't encountered any lock yet that I wasn't able to reassemble again :)

Thank you everyone for your help. I ended up using some springs from an old lock I had on hand, with a dowel as a follower.
