LaForge deadbolts?

Postby proFeign » 31 Jul 2009 15:25

Are LaForge deadbolts "high security" / do they have spool/security pins? I was challenged to pick one the other day with only a rake and I felt like I could set three or four of the pins (SPP style on the outermost ones) but the sawtooth rake couldn't get to the back ones well and I wasn't able to pick it in under a minute (it was a challenge and I only had one rake and a torsion wrench with me) and was just curious because I'm really a pretty beginner dude and wouldn't bet that it wasn't just that my skills weren't up to the job. I can pick all of the 4-pin Master locks I have (SPP or rake) and every deadbolt I've tried (all cheapo) and have a decent pick set but am still very very beginner-grade.

Searching for "laforge" on this site didn't yield anything but they seem to be popular in the area I live in. They look like an inexpensive brand but it's hard to know. Plus spool pins are cheap to manufacture in volume so I would believe either way.

PS the challenge was from my landlord when I mentioned that my own deadbolt (unbranded knockoff) is a joke to pick and he said "well pick the lock to my office and show me" but he's got a much newer LaForge deadbolt. Fortunately for me this is a low-crime area and there are cameras covering my front door area but I've wondered about LaForge because I see them all over now. I showed him I can rake a No3 Master in under ten seconds now so all I had when I stopped by his office was one rake and one wrench.

I would advice against picking that office lock as it is in use and it can break. If there is some challenge that you have to pick that LaForge deadbolt, buy one from a store. That way you can disassemble one and then you know what you are up against.
