I recently got an old schlage padlock, and i'm having trouble removing the core. It does indeed have a removable core, and under the shackle is a retaining screw. I've unscrewd it, but it doesn't want to come out all the way, not sure if it needs to. Using a screw driver i've tried to twist and pull on the core to yank it out, but it refuses to budge. I've also tried this in the unlocked position.
Could it be a best core inside where i need to hit a control shear line instead? Then why the retaining screw? I couldn't find a picture of what it looks like exactly, but it looks like this lock accept its steel, and has shclage printed on both sides.

I've picked what seems to be the control shear line just now, but again pulling out the core is a difficult task... its not wanting to come out.

Sometimes Best cores get stuck quite forcefully into the lock, especially if the lock has been exposed to the outside for a while. You may need quite a bit of force to pull the core out. Now about that screw, have you tried removing the shackle when you undo that screw?

It's kind of rusty, it's been outside a while. I'm taking it apart so that I can clean it.
I just tried removing the shackle after loosening the screw and it didn't do anything. So i'm going to keep it loose, and pick the lock to the control shear line again. When I do, i'll try to pull on the core pretty hard to see if it'll come out.
Any suggestions on a good tool I can whip up fast to yank this beast out?

A slide hammer/dent puller, but be careful, you could chew the keyway all to hell.
Does the screw come to a positive stop when you are backing it out, or does it get tighter and tighter until you cant turn it anymore?
Another tip, go buy a can of penetrating oil like Liquid Wrench, will help break through the rust.

Screw doesn't tighten/stop at all, it just keeps turning like the threads are skipping or something.

With the shackle open and away, turn it upside down and tap the bottom of the lock with a hammer, see if the screw comes out. If it does, use a punch down the shackle bore and see if you can tap the core out.
