ABUS 65/40 AND ABUS C83

Postby TheSkyer » 7 Oct 2009 12:20

Ello Fellow Lockpickers,

I must share something with you. Last night I opened a ABUS 65/40 and a ABUS C83. Now to put this in perspective. I have been picking for about a year (on and off) and I've tried MANY ABUS!

Unfortunately ABUS seems to be my arch enemy. Whatever I tried I never managed to get any of my many ABUS locks open (ok, one cutawat, but that's cheating). Somehow I just didn't get it.

However last night I was playing around with the ABUS 65/40 and in about 3 minutes it opened. I was astounded, flabergasten, blow of my socks..... It was a wonderful moment! And in all my triumph I took up the ABUS C83, a real b*&ch so I've heard. And what do you know... After 20 minutes of feeling and mapping the lock I got an idea. I noticed the last 2 pins locked up by overtentioning into a false set and I couldn't get them out. So I took a lockpick I've never used. A double Diamond kinda pick. It looks kinda like this:

(==============================)--------------------------------^-----^

By using this pick I could work pin 1 and 2 and 4 and 5 at the same time, making it possible to outsmart the the security pins. I could lock the pins into position simultaneously without forcing them into a false set. And you know what, 1 minute after I got this idea I got the lock open. That was 2 ABUS locks in one night! Picking locks can be so wonderfull XD

Good job, buddy! I have a couple of Abus padlocks and they're definately tricky. One is an Inox T84, and I have to say looks are definately deceiving when it comes to this little guy. It goes into false set pretty easily but getting back out is another story. I'm pretty sure there are mushrooms in there, cos spools don't usually give me much trouble.

The other is a shrouded 65/40, which I have yet to open. Take a look at the bitting and you'll see why! It's a tough job getting at 3 and 5, since it's awkward getting longer hooks into the tiny keyway. I'll crack it eventually though. :mrgreen:

Yea ABUS is the king when it comes to making keyways uncomfortably small.... The bitting on that key is pretty extreme, low and highs in order you don't want them to be in XD Well, just to keep your hopes up, if ABUS thought me anything it is that everything is possible as long as you keep at it. It's a matter of time (as with any lock, with the right amount of time given anything will open).

Yeah, tell me about it... thing is an absolute nightmare. I actually got it picked for the first time a while after I posted that! No luck getting it on camera yet though, it goes in and out of false set a lot and sometimes when I do get a pin set correctly, I lose a couple of other pins. Absolute pain to pick... there's a trick for every lock though, so I'll get the full pick on cam once I figure out this ones little secret. :mrgreen:

Im interested in that doublediamond pick, it sounds like a sabana pick but your asci drawing suggested that it has a straight handle, that could be from klom or goso, I have a pick from them and it is plated with some chrome or shiny metal, it has an unfinished edge that you can see the cutbreak edge where the punch cut into the metal until the second half of it fractured through, and the half diamonds are too big and the spacing is about five pins between half diamond. I was not impressed by that pick, and I still wonder if its a copy of the sabana that was created after seeing a photo rather than the real thing as the dimensions of the half diamond on the commercial one are in my opinion too large.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

It does have a straight handle, and it is indeed from the KLOM set.

being a noob - still picking with all kinds of "bend metal scrap" i've found that a safety pin bend like a shallow hook or half diamond works great for the abus 65/40 key way.
Besides they are easy to conceal, even thou carrying pick tools isn't illegal in Denmark, i just don't wanna bother explaining the police how much fun picking can be. you might have heard bout the cop15 here in Copenhagen last week, they freaking arrested a bunch of harda krishna monks for "intent to commit violent acts"! :roll:
Anyhow, asides from being a bit springy, safety pins work great on the small Abus keyways.
- A good lock makes a great illusion of security -
