Herculock 800 & an old Yale super pin tumbler

Postby Taurus420 » 20 Oct 2009 17:24

Hey guys, Got some cool new padlocks I got to keep after scrapping some old transformers. Ill post some pictures of them once I get back home. I have a few different Padlocks came from gates and electrical box's/transformer box's.

Most are solid Brass even the shackle is brass, "Herculock USA 800's" Some have "MLG&W" on one side some have "WB" on them. They are suprizingly hard to pick. I picked one of them with a thin short hook. Does anyone have any idea what kind of pins are inside these things??? and are they possible to gut. I see no screws or any seems. I'll post pics this Friday once I get back home.

The other cool lock I got was an old Yale has "LGW" on the bottom I it says "Super pin tumbler, lubricate w/ graphite" on the top of the lock... What kind of special pins would this Yale have since it says super pin tumbler on the top I'm guessing it has maybe barrel pins or something like that??? Any input???

Pics coming shortly

As far as I know, locks with brass shackles are used in places where rust is a major concern. Not heard of these particular locks before so I'm not sure about pins, but if they have removeable cores, the retaining screw will be inside so you can uncrew it when the shackle is open. Do any of them have keys?

As for the "super pin tumbler", usually when you read things like this on locks (or their packaging, for that matter) they turn out to be pretty standard. The Master no. 40, for example, claims it has a "precision pin tumbler mechanism" and it takes 10 seconds max to pick those open... you get the idea. I can't see Yale doing this though, but I guess you never know. Any idea how old it is?

congrats on the lock score. The WB padlocks are Wilson Bohannan, used extensively by power companies, telephone companies, etc. All brass shackles guarantee years of service without much corrosion.

Just to add to squelchtone's note, I would hazard a guess that MLG&W stands for "Memphis Light, Gas and Water", and that LGW stands for "Light, Gas and Water".
