New union... unusual

Postby Rickthepick » 22 Oct 2009 8:43

I have a new union lock here with no key.

Its an oval euro 6 pin with 2 offset antidrill pins in the cylinder. (sorry no pic)

been struggling picking it and couldnt understand why it doesnt look special.

just noticed today after a good clean with some wd40 that there are some strange wafer looking pins in the top of the cylinder slightly to the right of the pins...

cant believe i didnt see them.

gonna go pick it now (hopefully)

any ideas??? :?

Judging by the shape of the keyway, you have your hands on a Union DTEC. What you're seeing is a sidebar; I don't think we can discuss those in the open forums.

All new Union cylinders are 6 pin with the offset anti-drill pins like you described. The only oval cylinders in their current range are the 2X6 (key blank KB502) and the DTEC, which has a pretty distinctive keyway - same as yours. So yeah, it's definately a sidebar. However, they seem to be area specific and to the best of my knowledge, area specific sidebars are passive elements. They're only in place to stop keys blanks from other areas being used for duplication purposes, so they don't actually have any effect when it comes to picking. :)

Heh, told you it had a sidebar! ;)

Those drivers look pretty nasty, the ASSA that I had for a while had pins which were identical to those, and it was an absolute nightmare. I see master pins in there, so the extra shear line those couple of pins will give you should make things easier. Keep at it, again I don't think that sidebar needs to be picked but see if there is any movement there anyway. Come on man, you can do it!

the sidebar is pickable the gates in the wafers are all different heights and drop out of place very easilly.
