Constructing a rim lock skeleton key

Postby Rickthepick » 30 Oct 2009 6:53

Simple rim locks that use a single lever and talon often protect the simple mechanism using side wardings.

These are extremely easy to open using a skeleton key.

Get yourself a key of correct gauge and using a file, remove all the material from the center portions of the key.
Taken down as much as possible without weakening the key and leaving a small piece on the end to activate the mechanism, should work on any rim lock of that gauge.

alternatively a flat jiggler key is usually sufficient

There is a very good write-up on warded locks and skeleton keys at the top of this section. It covers most types of warded locks including the one you mention.

in the US, you can still buy the two key set of skeleton keys for these locks, one of them has a center ward cut the other is straight accross the top like the one shown. The key shaft is also skeletonized so that it fits in all holes.
