Can anyone help me with this lock?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Can anyone help me with this lock?

Postby trumpetmark » 19 Jan 2010 17:03

Hi - I'm pretty new to this but I just really need some help/advice on picking this lock

The lock has Wink Haus written on it, don't know if this matters, but the door has the same lock on both sides. I put the wrench in, picked the lock and it turned no problems, but when it went half way round, 180 degrees, it then stopped again and wouldn't budge. The pins now hanging down, I thought I would need to re-pick it, but I'm having absoloutely no luck whatsoever. I thought that maybe the lock needed both sides to be picked, so I went round to the other side and the lock was the same way up like before, picked it easily and turned it, and again stopped half way round. Now neither side seems pickable, and I have no idea where to go from here.

Can anyone shine some light on this for me?

Many Thanks

We got this exact same question yesterday. All in favour of a sticky entitled "Halp!!! My lock is stuck half way around what is going on" say I.

The plug sticks at 180 because the driver pins spring into the space usually occupied by the spine of the key. It's a big gap, same width as the pins, simple as that. And now you know how to fix it. Oh yeah, and don't pick locks that are actually on doors... at least not until you know how to fix stuff like this on your own. I don't get why so many people panic when this happens, it's a very simple thing.

I thought you would have had a eureka moment and figured this out since I pointed out what happened, but ok. Push all the key pins into the bible and rotate the plug.

Whoops, I meant driver pins. The key pins are the ones the key makes contact with, the driver pins are the ones you have set to the shear line. Those are the ones which are stuck in the keyway. Look at the side the springs are at, insert your pick and push those pins down while turning the plug and that's it sorted.

Did someone say my name?

=)

You know.. I made a diagram about 3 years ago for this exact situation. Please follow it, you'll know what's going on after you see it.

I should probably update it as it was a quick and dirty jpg I made for Schuyler the night he did this to his apartment door..

by the way, this is why we tell new users not to pick locks that they depend on, things can and will go wrong, and then oh snap, you cant lock the door for the night, and gang members come in and rape everyone. we're just trying to prevent that scenario.

You're welcome.

There should be a stick for common problems encountered when picking a lock.
