Made a padlock cutaway today...

Postby jzz20 » 2 Feb 2010 10:28

This is the first cutaway padlock we have made, turned out pretty well for a prototype.
The lock is a Lockwood 334B45, available at any hardware store/locksmith in Australia!

Hopefully we can eventually sell a few once we have worked out the best way to cut, hopefully we will do some high security locks as well :D

Well done!

Don't worry: it looks good even from the picture. Check if your camera has a "macro" setting, usually a flower icon. It's useful if you want a good picture of small objects like locks.

Cheers :)

Very nice... the inner core looks lovely!

I must say I've only really done ABUS pads myself.... but they are fun & well made which helps with the finish. I remember doing a bronze Yale padlock which had an inner core... was quite time consuming :/

Here's a little video of me on my mini mill :p

Wow, thats neat! I wish i had a mini mill, this thing cant be moved around too well ;)

I wish we had some smaller ends so that we could do the traditional slot for the pin stack view, but we came up with a neat way of doing it in the end i guess :)

I started out on a machine 4 times bigger than yours!! All i had was a 6mm and a 3mm cutter. Was good to learn though.

Its an Axminster Sieg X2 - a generic chinese thing. It's been faultless.... its more than accurate enough for the cuts I do and the tables are pretty solid. There is a knack to using it, but that comes with time... its mostly making a habit of locking the axis you're not working on to stop the bit biting and draging. But yeah, pretty good all round, must have done about 500 locks on it.

Thanks for the info snowy. I'll take a look at that one and a few others before I commit.
I am quite familiar with mill machining, as I used to set and operate a bridgeport at work for many years ,but I dont have the room for a full size machine in my current home workshop.

[/return hijacked thread to OP, thankyou]

I hope you will be ready to ship a few soon. I teach Keyless Entry and the number one request from the students on the critiques is to have a prop lock that helps them understand 'shear line' better. The current price on a simple cutaway is a bit dear for me to buy a dozen.
