Removing wafers from a cam lock

Removing wafers from a cam lock

Postby corey2444 » 28 Feb 2010 20:40

I took apart a cam lock and removed the wafers.

Basically, I pushed the wafers up the opposite of the way the spring contracts to the wafer, and used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it out.

These are are instructions from a book I have, except it says use tweezers not pliers. Well, there's no way in hell I could pull out these wafers using tweezers.. No way.. So, I used pliers and when I was finished, the result was wafers with teeth marks (from the pliers), and 3-5 lost springs. So, what am I doing wrong?

Also, now that I lost the springs what wafer kit do you recommend buying for cam locks?

This tool may be of some help, http://www.lockpicks.com/gator-automoti ... opper.aspx .

I've never used it so I dunno if it will only work on automotive use or not, but worth looking into. I have their face cap pliers and its very good quality so I'm sure that wafer popper tool would be good quality too. I've heard a lot of automotive locksmiths love this tool.

Some wafer locks, the wafers will just fall out or even pop out on ya. There are a lot out there that are either tight fits, constructed in such a way that once put in they are caught, or that have their edges staked over on the slots. I will usually use a small screw driver to pry up the wafer, or put it in a vise, and use a flathead with a small hammer to tap them out.

I bought a tool today almost identical to that one at lockpicks.com, but this one works well.

They are a local locksmith supply house. I don't see a website for them though, but I'm sure they'd ship to you.

The cost of mine where $26(something). If you're out of state they shouldn't charge you tax, but you may have to remind them.
