Abloy Protec car locks?

Postby Klaiviel » 23 Mar 2010 11:12

I think I can discuss this here as there will be no talk of picking, decoding, or bypassing, if I am wrong please correct me. Now for the most utterly impractical question ever; would it be possible to modify an Abloy Protec cylinder to be used as the door and ignition locks on a car? Let me be clear I understand the futility of doing such a thing as cars are vulnerable to all sorts of bypass. This is something I would be doing exclusively for the coolness factor with the possible eventual goal of using my house key to operate my car. Any suggestions other than don't waste your time and money? =P

You need a cam lock that can operate to the left and the right (lock and unlock) AND let you remove the key while leaving the door locked or unlocked, and then modify or make a cam that will interface with your current linkage inside the door.

Reading this link suggests the operation you are looking for is not possible:

The reason I suggested a cam lock is because it would probably fit in the current hole in the door without much modification. Now.. If you don't mind drilling a bigger hole you could use a mortise cylinder and then machine a cam to that would attach to the back and you would have both left and right turning ability. The cylinder is pretty beefy and would stick out from the door noticeably.
