Strange Locks on Real Estate

Postby Theist17 » 6 May 2010 14:44

As I was out doing my rounds for the U.S. Census, I noticed some strange locks on houses which were for sale. Here's a picture of the lock in question. I was thinking about it as I went about the business of placing a notice of visit on the door, and I thought that you would be able to tell me what the purpose of this thing is.

Just to be clear, I have no intention of doing anything with this lock. It's not mine, and it's also in use. I would never dream of doing anything more than taking a picture of the thing. If you don't believe me, have a mod shoot me a PM and I'll give them the phone number of my LCO and my ID number so you can check with the Census Bureau.

I'm just wondering what the purpose of the lock is. As you can see from the picture, it sure as shooting doesn't keep anyone out of the house.

So, what's up with this?

It is a supra electronic lock.

I will post more info in a moment. IIRC, (before I do some research) its electronic, and controlled by a IR encoded controller.

Basically a key lockbox, but non combination.

Oh cool! Thanks for checking into this for me.

I keep seeing some very interesting locks while I'm out and about. What distresses me is that there are so very many low-security locks on doors in my hometown. Stuff like Guard Security and knockoff Kwicksets. Egh.

This is a standard issue GE Supra Lock Boxes they are opened by wireless IR keys held by Realtors. The Keys are activated when the Realtor calls the owner's Broker to show the house. It is truly really cool to use.*

My mom is a property manager/realtor so I've been ever so lucky to play with one!!
