SPP'ing a lock with tall & short pin stack

Postby gilduran » 2 Jun 2010 16:36

I'm sure this issue has been addressed in another post somewhere, but I don't think I know the correct term to search for. I've tried short pin stack, tall pin stack, hi-lo pin stack, but can't find anything relevant to what I am looking for.

To make a long story short, I'm having some trouble lifting a short pin stack that is behind a tall pin stack. I think I am lifting the tall stack just enough to mess me up. The lock is an American 5260. I've tried using both small and large hooks, as well as small and large half-diamonds. I can get 3 of the 5 pins set and I believe the next is pin 5, which is a short stack behind 4 which is longer.

If someone could tell me the correct search term, I would be more than happy to search out the topic that covers this situation.

Thanks in advance

High Low typically, rather than Hi Lo. Either way, it's a common problem. Personally I like moving to a slightly firmer tension and a deforest diamond to pop the shallow pin.

I recently got my hands on a Peterson Gem (slimline). It's perfect for the lock you are having problems with. Peterson slimlines are thin enough to slip past the entire (standard American) keyway (yep all the way from the bottom of the keyway to the top).

With that pick in hand, the American keyway become moot point. And with the incredible reach that pick has, you can intentionally key up a lock with an 8-1 combo in the back and pick it with relative ease.

Forgot yo put that in my list of search terms, but I did try that too. What is a deforest diamond?

Interesting. Wish I would have had this problem last week when I was placing an order on the Peterson site. Oh well, I've been wanting a new rollup, so I guess I can pick up one of those while I'm at it. I did, however, order a long reach and a hooked diamond, but not the slender ones.

BTW, the picks in the Southord MPXS-14 set are also slim enough to make it down the middle of the American keyways. And the bigger Brinks locks, with removable cylinders, are American also.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll have to try both those suggestions when I get the picks.

For future reference, what would I have needed to search for to get the answer I needed?

It's an offset diamond pick - a hook with a diamond on the tip...

...which I think is what you are referring to here.

Cheers...

Finally got the 5260 open. Turns out I was trying to lift the pins in the 6th hole, which it empty, DOH!! Once I had that epiphany(sp) I was able to open the lock without much trouble. I'm really surprised American doesn't fill that 6th hole.

Thanks for the link. It's a good article, but I don't see how that helps me? It's not SPP'ing that I am having trouble with, it was getting to a short pin stack past a long pin stack.

Thanks all for you input.
