Best Single Sided No Cyclinder Grade 1 Deadbolt

Postby Klaiviel » 6 Jun 2010 23:22

Hey, I am looking for the best single sided no-cylinder Grade 1 deadbolt I can find. I am in the process of securing my apartment and while I have put an Abloy Protec on my front door I just can't justify buying a second one to secure my balcony porch which should never really need to be unlocked from the outside in the first place. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. :D

P.S. - In case you are wondering I do have permission from my landlord to make these modifications.

Does this door have windows in it? If not I can give you a description of a bolting/blocking system that is very strong for inward opening doors that requires no key. What kind of frame, metal or wood? Is there any gap between the door and frame? Doors open in or out?

One idea is to use a normal hinge. Screw both sides into the door and frame and remove the pin to release the door. This requires some very careful installation to keep the pin holes lined up and to drill out the pin hole just a little for free movement. If you use 3-4 inch screws into the frame it would take a police barricade ram several tries and a splintered door to get it open.

You should probably replace the screws in the normal hinges anyway.

Regrettably the door does have one huge window in it; however, I am on the second floor so I do feel slightly better about it. I am planning on reinforcing the glass with security film but I have not yet done that. In regards to what you mentioned about using a hinge; while that would work this is an apartment so I want to make this happen with minimal modifications so I would like to use the existing deadbolt hole already drilled in the door. It is a normal door that swings inward with a wooden frame, there is very little gap. So far I have come across locks like the Schlage B680 which are Grade 1 and one-sided; however, they do not come with exterior trim which is a problem as I need something to cover the hole that has already been cut. Here is a link to what I am talking about: http://www.handlesets.com/schlage-b680- ... es/p489578

Since it is not likely that you will be entering the apartment from this door, install any deadbolt of sufficiently strong bolt and remove the tailpiece from the outer lock. It then cannot open the door no matter how good the lock picker is.

Raymond I like that idea, that is probably what I will end up doing. globallockytoo while that device looks cool I am not sure as to how it would be used in this configuration, this door is not a sliding door it is a regular hinged door.
