lock system for cargo box

hello,
I have a problem and I didnt know where to ask. Please help me if you can.
I am building a cargo box for a large 3-wheel bicycle or trike i am building.
i am not mechanically inclined, but i am building a bike with features that i need so i can get around town. i can no longer afford to drive a car, and the bus service in my town (detroit) has become very unreliable.
so hence a bike with a cargo box i can lock. i will have a 12 volt battery to use not for a motor but for lights, horn, locks etc.
the box will be 2 by 3 feet out of 18ga metal
I want to have a lock i can install that i can open both with a manual key and electronically with a remote.
i have access to a welder to install the system.
i have found circuits and system for the remote part. that part would cost about 30 dollars and i have found stuff like a Drawer(Cabinet) electric deadbolt lock for nine dollars on ebay, but it doesnt come with keys.
i have thought about a car/trunk lock and latch because they come with copyable keys and a remote system i could use, but i get absolutely overwhelmed with choices, i have no idea what make/model car system could be converted to a cargo box.
i think there must be a simple, inexpensive solution, i am sure someone must have done this before. suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I think an eletric trunk lock from a car might be best - most likely they will come in two parts, one lock body and one lock cylinder that's mounted somewhere else nearby and linked to the lock body through a pull wire or similar. And an electric actuator that's built in or also mounted nearby.
Any of these should be mountable on a cargo box, and also hold it closed reliably (as opposed to a cabinet lock that might be pried open more easily).

thanks for the suggestion. i think you are probably right about the car trunk lock. any idea what make/model car would be a good fit for conversion? i was thinking in terms of size, weight and ease of installation.

Think outside of the automotive box. Why not a 12V electric door strike with some common house type lock ? Just something else to consider.


Consider mounting a charging jack on the box also. Dead batteries are not fun.

LOL if you want some fun and have the space, put a car alarm inside!

Since you have a battery, definitely put a light inside the box.

i confess i had never heard of a door strike, definitely looking into it, although what i have found so far is rather expensive. have to check on ebay when i get home. thanks.

i will also look at the car alarm, but since i am also running headlights, front/back turning lights, horn, brake lights, underframe lights, maybe a keypad or two,and yes, trunk lights, i might not have the juice for it all. lol! (i dont know anything about batteries either, hence my absurd plans!) the lights will all be LEDs of course

Maybe look into a solar panel or two, it will help keep the charge up. Electric door strikes are like $20-30 on Ebay.
